| Given the move within the Caribbean region towards health sector reform, the question for Environmental Health Units should be what is their role within the health sector. Environmental Health improvement and management requires the involvement and collaboration of a number of sectors. These might include water authorities, solid waste authorities, hotels, tourism authorities, commercial establishments, politicians, health care workers, unions, mass media, education & training institutions, farmers etc.
This paper prepared by the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute, examines some of the critical challenges and barriers facing National Environmental Health units and environmental health management in the region. It also seeks to identify some of the new and emerging roles and foci of these units as they attempt to fulfill their mandate of improving environmental health conditions.
