Yes, I have seen this auction too.

But I would translate "ordentlich" as fair, acceptable (at least on Ebay!  )

And this one is the opposite. We know exactly what he is selling. The description is detailed and clear. But what are the photographs about?

Hi Ismenio,

the "French" computer is a Lexibook...

Now another similar auction in German :

I like "Auf dem Bild ist der ordendliche Zustand zu ersehen" which I understand as "On the picture you can see the perfect condition".... Except that there is no picture

Can you image if people did this for other items?
For sale: "a computer program!", "a DVD", "a car!"
You do feel like asking them for details, what if it's a CC1 they're willing so sell for a couple of bucks?

Thanks Tom! I'm still scratching my head as to how a vendor would list something like that for same without that very important detail! Well, at least they said it was a Novag and put up the picture. Can you imagine if they had only listed it as "chess computer"?

And there it is :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=92100&item=5990614594&rd=1
the description says approximately "working chess computers with several levels. Good for beginner, intermediate and strong player"... no other information, no picture

Now why didn't I think of that?! Good idea Tom!

And you're right. Even though I live in a house, a really modest one, I have pretty much reached my capacity which is good news in the sense that I can watch my expenses more wisely

Somewhat embarrassed, I recently caught myself considering throwing away the boxes. Which to the true collector seems like a mortal sin, doesn't it? But when you see that the Novag Sapphire handheld comes in a box that could store at least twenty of them, you may condone this offense, or even start sympathizing with it.

Aaaaaargh. No Tom don't do it.

Even in England we have room for boxes.

... By the way, congratulations on your new "babies!"

I don't remember us ever bidding on the same auction though I was tempted to do that on some recent ones that you won I'm completely maxed out on space here so I may have to concentrate on handhelds now and I know you have an excellent taste for them.

Ismenio

Ismenio,

Yes, small computers do have their advantages, especially if - like me - you're living in a city apartment with a largish family. I get the impression you're also reaching the limits of the available space.

But even with handhelds and other portables, space is a finite commodity.

To be honest, I'm very happy about the fact that I some of them are without their boxes - which occasionally allows me to store more than a dozen in a shoebox!

But even with portables, there's a drawback: the choice of available small computers seems so be much more limited than with table top machines.

So don't expect any robots or machines that recognize their chessmen among them!

tom

I have seen several such auctions on ebay.fr ("échiquier électronique") or ebay.de : no picture, no reference, not even the company...

Of course, no bidders too ;-)

I just found this online deal:

http://www.alphamart.com/prod/toys.shtml

Retail: 129.00
Our Price: $34.95

The direct link to purchase is:
http://www.gochargeit.com/enetgroup/rcfoods/cart.htm?add+kt101

Now, what model is it? Is it really a good deal?

Ismenio

Ismenio,

Looks like the Novag Accord, which on my site is rated for "beginners / occasional players". To me this doesn't sound as an exceptionally good deal. I think I bought mine at less than 30 euros.

Best regards,

tom
