Anyone have a link to the Milton Grandmaster? Im assuming its pretty rare and collectable.

Daniel.
Hi Daniel

Very collectable but not particularly rare. Here is one on Ebay :-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5174035482&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

For info you can't do better than Ismenios description and links :-

All the best

Many thanks for putting it on the site Ismenio. I finally got to see it.

Thanks also Bernhard I tried Media Player Classic but as with previous attempts my system came up with the Microsoft Error Message box. Something funny is happening!

There you go folks:

http://www.ismenio.com/spracklen.html

I trimmed down the 30min show to leave only the intro, Kathe's segment and credits. There are two options, a Windows Media low resolution one (14Mb) and a bigger one (129Mb) but with much better quality. I used the 1.2Gb version for that. It turned out, the "editable" version from Archive.org wasn't all that editable

As a computer guy, I have to mention Gary Kildall , one of the guys interviewing Kathe. He's the father of the operating system CP/M which, before Windows and DOS, was the standard for microcomputers.

More on Gary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kildall

PS: The chess program feature in the video, can be found on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4315&item=8156713756&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V />

What was the chess computer at the start which moves the pieces? Great video. BTW, whats the elo of Sargon?

Daniel.

the robot in the video is a Milton Grandmaster. And the Elo of Sargon III depends on the used hardware.

Windows Media Player on my machine does not want to know this video clip.

looks like you have no MPEG4 decoder installed. You could use the Media Player Classic instead from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358 . And the XviD codec from http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ is able to decode MPEG4 too.

Thanks for your help Bernhard. Windows Media Player on my machine does not want to know this video clip.

I shall wait for Ismenio to put it on the website and then try again.

I got that version and also the editable one. I'll make a clip with Kathe's interview only and make a smaller version and put it on the site.

That is cool stuff!!!

Thanks again for the link Bernhard!

Hello Mike,

I could not get Kathe Spracklen to talk. I clicked several of the downloads and the modem was busy for a while but nothing appeared each time?

try to download the complete video first. Right click on the MPEG4 link and chose "Save as.." (77 MB). After the download finished doubleclick the file. It was played well with sound in the media player on my computer. If you have more time and a flatrate, than the MPEG2 file will be your choice (better quality). But it's size is 1.2 GB!

I hope this helps,
Bernhard

Interesting info Bernhard, thanks. I have always wondered what was said in CSS. Now I will be able to follow at least some of it.

Hi Ismenio,

Bernhard, are there online archive of German newspapers where we could see ads or articles on the Mephistos?

there are online archive of newspapers, but AFAIK nothing (computer) chess specific.

The best german language sources are "Modul" (later "PC-Schach") from Austria  and "CSS" (Computer Schach & Spiele, which means computer chess & games). CSS was produced on paper every 2nd month, until the end of last year, for over 20 years. From 2005 on, it's published only online: http://www.computerschach.de/. But the company scanned the complete CSS from 1983 to 2000 and within the next few weeks there is a "cronicle of computer chess" (in German) available on DVD http://www.computerschach.de/chronik/. If you don't got them on paper, than this is the perfect chance for every collector. And the final push for taking some german lessions.

Viele Gre,
Bernhard

P.S. @Ismenio: sorry for just crossposting my mail, but it was easier than a complete new writing.

Why did I have to see this post now! ?!!! Now it's going to be a long day at work! I just want to go home now and watch it!

BTW, I love the internet archive. That's where I got the Tasc information. The only problem is that sometimes they're really slow and some pages don't always render completely. It took me over a week to get some of them. I also love teh Wikkipedia and the Project Gutenberg.

Bernhard, are there online archive of German newspapers where we could see ads or articles on the Mephistos?

Thanks again for one more must have post!

Hi folks,

here is a "must look" video for every computer chess fan. Kathe Spracklen presents Sargon III on a Mac: http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=computerchronicles&collectionid=203
