It's a good list Ismenio.

As for auctions I can remember a few special ones - in September the Russian Elektronika, then recently a Fidelity Private Line, a Renaissance with Sparc, Brute Force and Analyst D, and a CXG Sphinx 50; and of course your own Byte auction ! Of the Ebay auctions the Fidelity would take the award I think.

Whilst Revelation was not "released" in 2006, it might still qualify as Best Newcomer of 2006. As far as I am concerned Ruud is out on his own in producing innovative products and Novag, Saitek etc should be in the Hall of Shame along with Mr "Cloth Cap" Sharma.

Alain I saw the Scorpio auction. I always get agitated when this happens, but I am not sure that it is more frequent now than in previous years? Very annoying when it happens on one you are interested in though, and especially when you are one of the bidders !*!

Any ideas on Forum Post of 2006? The Citrine thread was by far the longest and most read of 2006.

All the best
Mike

Thanks, Ismenio, for your nice review of the year that is about to expire. I specially loved the Hall Of Shame featuring Indian chess player Umakant Sharma, who would not have become famous had he not used a bluetooth headset to cheat (and win) in Indian chess tournaments.

There are some rumours that the picture above represents the aforesaid mr Sharma. But how much truth there is in this statement is unclear.

With bluetooth regards,

tom

Hi Ismenio,

Ebay : I have the impression that more and more rare computers auctions do not go to the end and are sold outside of ebay (last week, a Scorpio for sale in France was "broken" mysteriously). That is for me the main thing about ebay in 2006...

I don't think the Revelation qualifies for the "Release" of the year... I hope it will in 2007
So even if I am not fully satisfied with my Citrine, I would vote for it for 2006

Hall of Shame... may be Topalov ? or Kramnik ? The fact that electronic cheating suspicion reaches the higher levels of chess is to me more important than the Sharma affair.

Best regards,
Alain

Hi all!

Just a quick note so you all know I'm still here (If anyone has extra time they're willing to sell please contact me, I'm willing to pay a reasonable price ) and also to apologize for the delay in replying to the messages - I'm slowing catching up with them.

I wanted to post a note about notable events from 2006 relate to chess computer but again, no time ...
So, if anyone wants to comment on this thread, please do so!

A few things on top of my head:

  • Notable eBay auction? (I really don't know - wasn't active in eBay this year!)
  • Vapoware of the year? The winner: Excalibur Phantom (will we ever see it?)
  • Release of the year? I'd say Ruud Martin's Revelation (While I'm glad Novag did release the Citrine, that really didn't excite me that much - But do like that we had at least this coming out! IMHO)
  • Big event? How about Kramnik losing to Deep Fritz? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6212076.stm) (We're all doomed!)
  • And for the Hall of Shame, I nominate Mr. Umakant Sharma (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061227/od_nm/india_chess1_dc_1)

All the best to all of you,

Ismenio
