I do not understand the situation either Wesley. It is more than ten years since any manufacturer (apart from Ruud) released a strong "state of the art" chess computer.

Is this retrogressive behaviour seen in other types of consumer electronics where PC software has cornered much of the market? Games consoles, which went through a difficult period, have recovered as strong as ever.

You are probably right about batteries and power supplies as well. When portable chess computers first came out they ate batteries. The first Novag Micro Chess used 2x 9volt batteries in 12-15 hours. Nowadays similar gadgets seem able to go on for months on a couple of AAs.

All the best
Mike

Citrine has an improved OBSIDIAN program, with a faster processor than the Obsidian.
Processor 20 Mhz

I agreed with you.  They should have better hardware even though it is just a small gain.  I did some look up on the internet after I received my Citrine.  I opened the Citrine and confirm the processor that in use, it is a H8/3687,  by the way, I am not a computer hardware person, please correct me if I am wrong.  Anyway, I did a search and found out the processor is only cost $4.95 each for every 1000 units order !  However, I am not sure what other associated cost involves due to having a slight different hardware like Sapphire.    I doubt it would be over $50 in total, if the processor is only cost approx. $5.  Any hardware experts here to confirm my findings?

Regards,

Chest-Nut

Sorry, I have to correct what I wrote, the processor that I found that cost $5 is only on the same family that have 56K ROM and 4K RAM vs 56K ROM and 3K RAM.  It is close but not exact.  But I assume it cost about the same.

"I cant understand why those companies dont make strong chess computers like in the past?

Actually we saw nice, but weak chess computers like Excalibur Grandmaster (1850 elo) and Novag Citrine (1900 elo).

I think isnt hard to make a low-cost stronger computer. I believe a 30 - 40MHz with Fruit, Toga, Naum, Glaurung, Aristarch, Pro Deo,Spike  or other free engines wouldn't be sufficient for put 2200 - 2300 elo in this machines?

(Why, for example,  Novag dont make "CITRINE" (a very nice board) wich star sapphire program and hardware?)

Another interessant point is... "batteries, not cabes".

Wich batteries (excalubur grandmaster) we can transport computers for any place, but wich eletric cabes (mephisto exclusive) is not possible.

I not undestand this companies.  >:(
