Hi Mike

There are a number of similar machines called Portachess ........  but most peg sensory portables work the same way. The Portachess I have here has Level, New Game and Reverse Play buttons and a Off/On/Save switch?
Well let's say you are moving the pawn e2-e4. Press down on the e2 pawn and the e file and second rank lights should come on + a beep. Put the pawn in the e4 hole and the Portachess beeps accepting your move and starts computing. The rank LEDs should flash and then the machine indicates its move.
If this doesn't happen somethings wrong. Possibly some sensors are faulty. If you suspect the sensor switches try them all to see which react.
Just pushing the Level key should get a beep each time and a change in the rank lights which eventually all go on.

Let us know how you get on
Mike W

I bought an old Portachess computer in a charity shop and don't know how it works. You move the white pieces and a pressure button puts the lights on at the side of the board. But there is no indicator as how the machine should move. Maybe it's not working and I don't have the manual, of course. Can anyone help? It's an old 1980's machine.
