Hi Folks!

I'm glad to see the DVDs are arriving. I also didn't expect them to get to you this fast!

I'm starting to get some emails as well and I'm glad folks seem be be enjoying it.

However, I also got 1 report of a DVD that won't play (replacement is coming!), so there may be others like that

Sadly, though this project is pretty much over, my time is still very limited. So I may not have as much time to the forum as I thought I would but will try to hang around more often if you don't mind

@Christian: Glad to hear you got it! You know, not all material made it to the DVD and I had some cartoon scenes that you kids might have liked - maybe one day we will see the "deleted scenes"

@Alain: Thanks for the heads up. Please let me know if you have any problems.

@Tom: Many thanks for the kind, yet undeserved words! I'm glad you liked it. Picking up the right music to use was not easy but I'm glad it worked. Someone else made a similar comment via email.

And I have to say that your site helped me a lot when I started collecting the computers. And for an unbiased comment, just look at what echoman had to say about it
Keep up the good work!

The little I have done pales in comparison to what you, Alain, Micha, Kurt and others have done for the chess computer community! I'm glad we have this virtual connection!

I have to say that after watching the DVD myself I did find many spots where these comments came out:

- I thought I had fixed that!
- That's dumb!
- Uh-oh!!
- What was I thinking!!

Best regards,

Ismenio

Today the postman brought me a yellow envelope with the Chess Computers Revolution. I was surprised to see it so soon! Ismenio's next project could be to write a booklet for eBay sellers to learn how an object can be shipped really fast; eBay objects rarely reach me in less than three weeks.

Needless to say I was pleased with the attention paid to the overtom site; at times I sat blushing in front of the dvd player.

What I also liked very much were the explanations and demonstrations that involved robotic computers. To see one Milton computer usually suffices to leave most people open-mouthed. An array of three MB computers operating shoulder to shoulder provided an impression that's hard to rival.

What I personally liked very much indeed was the choice of music combined with moving images, some of which were strong enough to be used as video clips. The way for instance in which the music was combined with Ismenio running up an down the stairs to show the computers had a powerful appeal to me.

Occasionally, I also saw Mrs Overtom look up from her book and watch the images with unfeigned interest. I'm sure I'm going to have some closer looks at the dvd in the weeks to come. But for now I should congratulate Ismenio and thank him for the service he has done to the chess computer community.

With best regards,

tom

All,

Quick update. Of the 42 (!) orders received, 95% have been shipped. Thank you again for your support and special thanks to those who sent a donation.
Again, please let me know if you don't receive yours or have any problems. I should send the remaining ones within the next two days.

Something else that surprised me, the number of countries the orders came from: 11 (!)

All the very best,

Ismenio

Gentlefolks,

The first batch of orders has been shipped! You’ll have to thank my wife for helping me with packing, filling out custom forms and going to the post office
The ones in the US should get theirs within 3 days and for everybody else it will take a week or so.

I am also burning new copies for new orders received since yesterday and should be shipping them early next week. Again, let me know if you don’t receive yours or if you have problems playing the DVD. One thing I have to mention. Since I’m still learning this stuff and used regular basic consumer equipment, the sound is something you may have to tweak in certain parts of the video. Sometimes you may have to turn the volume up a bit to be able to hear it well, in other parts it should be fine.

Now that the DVDs are making their way to you, apprehension is settling in! :-
I consider all of you a very intelligent, knowledgeable and sophisticated group of people, a tough audience indeed! As you watch it, keep in mind that I tried to show our little universe under a different angle, highlighting mostly the enjoyment we get out of these machines. Even when technical information is presented, I tried to make it "not boring”, so to speak. I hope you’ll like that spin! I think that even those not crazy about chess computers will like some of the segments

I wanted to have one or two friends screen pre-release versions as I was working on it. Then provide feedback and, then I could make changes based on that. That would be ideal but because of time constrains, it was not feasible

I also wanted to post some short clips for everyone to check them out but again, time and other technical difficulties got in the way.

Thanks again for the kind words and for all the messages and for the donations.

While you wait for the DVD to arrive, here are the screen shots of the menus, with the chapters so you have a general idea of what to expect. Some may get a DVD with a slightly different layout but the content and the chapters are exactly the same.

(Screen shots)

List of chapters:

1-Introduction
2-In the Beginning
3-Miami Chess Museum
4-Guessing Game
5-Sizes and Shapes
6-Mighty Tasc
7-Pocket Calculators
8-Interview: Ruud Martin
9-Interview: John Dutton
10-Interview: Sue Winkler
11-Websites
12-Ismenio's Collection
13-The Companies
14-Hard to Quit
15-The Robots
16-End Game

Nervously-waiting-for-reviews Regards

Ismenio

@Mike, and others: Thanks the comments! I also thought I wouldn’t be able to complete this. Quite a number of times I considered giving up on the whole thing and I have to confess that I’m not sure I would do this again if I had the chance to start over. This video-editing thing is harder than it looks! It may take a couple of hours of work to get just 2 minutes of final footage!!! I’ll never again complain because it takes years for Hollywood to make a Spiderman movie

Ismenio,

Huge congratulatons, i am sure this will be the release of the year.

Some thoughts for fans wanting a copy of the dvd:

Ismenio is being very kind and modest when he says it is 'free' to anyone who wants a copy. However consider that shipping from the USA to Europe will alone cost around $6-$7, then you have the cost of the jiffy bag envelope, the dvd disc, dvd case, printed sleeve etc etc and plus all the time it takes to get everything sent out..... so please consider all this if you haven't already

Ian.

Friends,

I didn't expect that! I really thought that, altogether, I would have 10-15 requests, top. It's been about 24 hours since the release and I've had 21 requests for the DVD! Plus 5 that I'm seeing here on this thread! Wow!

First off, thank you for all the kind messages and also for all those who made a donation (some very generous!!!) to cover costs.
You all now gave me extra work as I now have to print labels, package, send them, etc (Just kidding!!!)

I really hope you enjoy at least some of the material there. Now I'll address some questions not covered in the FAQ and I'll update the page when I have some time.

- Donation: Donation is really not required. I never planned on selling the DVD or making any money on it. But I thought that folks would like to send something to cover costs so that's why I added the PayPal button as it is really convenient (even makes things easier for me as far as printing labels!).
There's no "minimum donation", whatever you want to send I'll be grateful for.

- Requests: Though I will be monitoring this thread, it is really easier for me if you make your request via the page ( www.ismenio.com/chess_dvd.html ). If you have problems ordering through the page you can contact me directly via email. Remember that I need your full address. I actually got one request from a friend who didn't give the address

- Languages: I'm sorry that I only have it in English and I don't have plans on translating it. The only other language I could translate it to is Portuguese but I don't have the time to do it. However, if anyone wants to help, let me know. The easiest for me would be for someone to dub the dialog in the target language, maybe record as an MP3 file and send it to me. I could then lay that over the voice track. Subtitles require a lot of work, believe it or not.

- Compatibility: I'm using quality media (not those buy-in-bulk blank DVDs for a few cents!) so you shouldn't have problems playing it on any standalone DVD player that is not too old. I'm using DVD-R type which from I have researched is the most compatible format. However, there is a chance that you could have problems. If that happens, please contact me and I will try to send you a replacement copy on a different format.

I will try to respond to all the messages but I ask that you be patient with me as time is still a scarce commodity for your tired friend on this end.

I will try start shipping the DVDs tomorrow and now I'm the one curious to find out what you will think of it. It will take me some time as it seems the USPS requires a custom form filled out for anything that is not a letter   (for outside the US of course, which is true for most of the requests I received)

Again, thank you all very much and all the very best!

Ismenio

PS: (Long!)

@ruffsteve: Please send me an email with your address and I'll be happy to send you a copy. Not sure why you had problems with the link on the page From the other emails I got it was working for everyone else. Sorry about that

@Robert: I think I still have your address but can you send me again via email just to confirm? I still don't know the shipping costs but I have some I'll be sending to beautiful Germany tomorrow so I'll have an idea. But please, don't worry about it a bit. I'll happy you want to see it.

@Sargon: Same deal. Just send me an email with your address so I can send you a copy and if you want to make a donation just use PayPal or contact me. Thanks!

@TerryG: You know the drill Just send me an email

Friends,

I am happy (and relieved!) to officially announce the release of the documentary "Chess Computers Revolution" on DVD!

It is the result of almost 3 years of work, from the time the idea was born to this date as I post this message here.

The DVD is available, free of change, to anyone who wants a copy. Instructions on how to order and more information about it can be found here: www.ismenio.com/chess_dvd.html

Keep in mind that this is the first time I'm doing something like this, so don't expect a "Discovery Channel" like feature
If you can bear watching the 1-hour and 53-minutes of material, split in 16 chapters, I hope you will find something interesting that was worth watching.

I would be curious to read about your honest comments here, once you get it and have watched it. At the very least, we have something to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the Fidelity Chess Challenger 1.

I have but one simple request: that you do not make copies of it. Since anyone can get it from me, there's really no reason for making copies.

For those who want to make a voluntary donation, to cover the costs (media, case, shipping, etc.) I have set up a PayPal button that you can use.

Lastly, I want to thank all who supported and encouraged me in this project.

With best regards,

Ismenio
