Hello,
I just received my Radio Shack 1900L and it is indeed a very nice compact computer.  The magnetic pieces are definitely stronger than the saitek ones. However, my computer was slightly used and I noticed some wear on the squares as I was looking at it from and angle.

The wear is due to the contact between the board and the magnets (which actually potrude a bit from the bottom of the pieces). The Saitek and Excalibur pieces may not be as strong but at least they have a small plastic guard which minimizes the contact between the board and pieces. I suggest placing felt at the bottom of these pieces if you own the 1900L.

Thanks for setting up that match and posting your results, Nick. I'm always surprised when a completely identical machine is simply relabelled and repackaged under a different brand. I wonder why Radio Shack didn't sell more of these machines considering this is the only talking computer that I'm aware of under that brand.
Hmm, I was almost certain I read somewhere that the 1900L didn't have magnetic pieces.

This evening I finally got around to testing the fidelity Little Chesster and RadioShack 1900L.

The boards themselves are identical, with the exception that the lights on Little Chesster are all red whereas the lights on the 1900L are red on the left side 1-8 and green on the bottom a-h.  All the level settings and functions seem to be identical.  Another minor difference are the chess pieces themselves.  The pieces with the 1900L are slightly larger and the magnets are stronger.  The speech and everything else is identical.  So if I were to have a choice of just one or the other based on looks only, the better chess pieces would make the 1900L the better choice for me.

To test how they play I set both to Level A5 which is the 30 sec/move setting and I used Crafty 19.01 in Fritz 8 set a 5 Ply/move.

Since this was meant to be a clone test I forced Crafty to play 1.f3 as its first move to ensure that computers do not use their opening books and play by themselves.

Well I can confirm that every single move from start to finish was played exactly the same by both Little Chesster and 1900L.

So to conclude, YES both machines have 100% the same software.

Here is the game that was played:

Thank you very much Phil
The 1900L does indeed look like a nice overall machine, the only down side is that I hear it doesn't have a magnetic board.
I just checked my mail and found Alain also sent me a copy of that file. I really appreciate it! Thanks again for being so helpful guys!!

James

You're quite welcome. I can't speak for the little chesster but the 1900L has one of the best magnetic boards of all RadioShack models I have owned. I can tilt the board at a 90 degree angle and the pieces don't slide off. The pieces are much heavier and solid as well. The main annoyance is that you cannot totally silence the voice. He still says things like "You'll have to move my rook for me." when he castles. Or if you make a mistake and press on the wrong square when moving his pieces, he will say things like "No, my pawn to E4".

Hi James,
The little chesster does indeed resemble the 1900L.  I have the 1900L talking chess tutor and have a zip file that has jpg images of each page in the manual (Thanks again Tom!).  I sent it to the email address you provided.  It's roughly 4.6mb in size.

Enjoy!

That sounds like a great match, Nick. I can't wait to hear the results.

Well Alain, my address is ***@Yahoo.com and I'd really appreciate it if you sent it.

Raven:

I am hoping Tom already has a confirming answer for you  If not I will test the Little Chesster against the 1900L.  I have also assumed that they are the same but I have not compared any games as yet.  I will try and test them this weekend.

best regards

If Tom allows it, I'll put it on my site but in the meantime, send me your address and I'll send it to you.

Best,

Alain

Thank you for sharing that information. Would you happen to have any details about the talking feature? I tried clicking on that the link for the 1900L manual, but unfortunately it was dead.
Thanks again,
James

Hi,

I have neither of these computers but I just had a look at the 1900's user manual posted a few days (weeks ?) ago by Tom and I can tell you that this is definitely an "Excellence series" computer : the levels as well as the options are triggered by the same squares.

best regards,
Alain

Hi RavenJA,

I have a Little Chesster (though it's not on the main site) and the program is the same Par program that is used for the Fidelity Phantom series (AFAIK), I don't have the Radio Shack so I can't comment on that but I think Tom might once he sees your post. I think we could compare the voice to see if they match. If the comments are the same, we probably have a match.

Regards,

Hello,
I'm considering purchasing a Radio Shack 1900L computer and I was hoping someone could provide me with some information. There was a post on here a few years ago with a little information on this machine and Tom Luif has some information on his site but I haven't found much information about the talking feature.

While surfin the net, I came across a picture of a "Little Chesster" talking game by Fidelity. It looks remarkably similar to the 1900L (see links below) and I was wondering if it is in fact a clone. If so, can someone please tell me more about these machines.
Thank you,
James
