You're making me more and more curious about this Perry!
Sadly, most of my computers are now stored and I don't have  easy access to them but I'll try to see what I can do.

What's the deadline for this contest?

Best regards,

Ismenio

It's hard for me to guess but,  (/start_Jeopardy_song) I'm going to try the Fidelity Mini Sensory:

Thanks, Ismenio. What do the other contestants think?

Just as importantly, what do their hand helds think after 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5  ?

(My Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 isn't a hand held, but it won't go along with Alekhine's Defense anyhow -- it responds consistently to 1.e4 Nf6 with 2.Nc3.)

Hi Perry,

Many thanks for this posts. I didn't know about this interesting anecdote! I think it's rare to hear Fischer in connection with chess computers (but that could be me).

An anecdote from Yasser Seirawan's 1992 "No Regrets"

That brought up a funny anecdote. Bobby [Fischer] had obtained a hand-held computer that had played the "funniest move I've ever seen." The game had begun 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 -- Alekhine's Defense. "Now came a move I've never dreamed off! [sic] Can you guess it? Well, it played 2...Rg8!" Everyone erupted with laughter. After calming down we began to realize that even this move contained the kernel of an idea. After 3.exf6 gxf6, Black controls the half-open g-file!

Does anyone know which hand-held Fischer was referring to? If not, what would be a reasonable guess?

Later in the same chapter Yaz points out that "Bobby was also very interested in the strength of the World Champion microcomputer, The Chess Machine" so that wouldn't be it.

Many thanks!

Perry
