Hi Mark
Your video would grace any classy retail website.
For UK buyers £149.99 is going to be about as low as it gets for now. Certainly it is no more expensive overall than buying from the USA, when you add on shipping ($70-80) and (unless you can avoid it) import duty + handling (about 20%). Niggemann marginally cheaper for UK when they get theirs.
All the best
Mike

In my case, price + shipping + customs  (I was not able to avoid it), I had mine for  around 350 euros...
more than $ 500 ...
I was not very good this time. It's expensive to be one of the first to have it.
After mid january, Niggermann will sell it for 200 euros.

Chess-Sets-UK is playing my YouTube video on their Phantom product page:

http://www.chess-sets-uk.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/21_39/products_id/433

Their price is £149.99GBP. That's over 300 U.S. dollars!

-Marko

PS There have been over 500 views on YouTube. I should be getting royalties.

I noticed that The Chess Piece Chess Set store has a new Phantom Force listed on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190177870852&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:1123

It will be interesting to see what it sells for.

-Mark

there is no point in buying at ebay if the final price is higher than the price as new
the lowest price I saw was 169 $ , 31 $ lower than the ebay price

I just noticed that the "Advanced Robotic Chess Tutor" at Hammacher Schlemmer is called the "Mirage by Excalibur" not Phantom Force. Interesting.

-Marko

Also, their writeup states, "The computer has an estimated U.S. Chess Federation Class A skill rating of 1900".

Marko,

"Mirage" was the working name before the launch. The pictures on Hammacher website must be photoshopped from before the official ones.

Hello,

The model "Sharper Image Phantom Chess Game - QU153"

is the same as

"Excalibur's Phantom Force Electronic Chess - 740D"

?

Tnx

botrem

Hello botrem,

Yes, the two units are the same, at least in the U.S. Excalibur sells a Phantom Force in Europe that has four languages (English, German, Spanish and French). The unit from the Sharper Image only has three languages (no German).

Nice pictures, thank you Mike!

EPF's pieces really look very small; i am not sure, but is it possible, that they are even smaller than Alexandra's or King Arthur's?

Robert

Hi Robert

Well the chessboard and pieces are a lot smaller, and the whole chess computer less bulky than the Phantom, but it is still a reasonable size. You can see for yourself.

The pieces are too small, perhaps designed more to fit into the storage compartment, rather than for satisfying chess. The chess computer itself is neat and quite well designed and built, at least from what you can see without opening it up.

Yes, I agree, the old Fidelity Phantoms were too bulky with lots of wasted space inside.

Confusing number of Phantoms regards

If at least the program would be a better one than Alexandra's...

About the noise: maybe the sliding rails (it this the correct term?) need some lubricant?

Robert

Hi Bryan

Kids, what would you do with them?

Whatever you do, don't look for gratitude.

Socks and hankies regards

Hi Mike
Well done and great photo.
How big are the actual squares as they look quite small?
I've asked my eldest son who is a full time hardhouse DJ in places like Ibiza and on really, really good money to buy me one for Xmas. This is his reply I got earlier this week.
"Jesus man, do you think i'm made of money"
All those Christmases putting toys & bikes together when he and his brother had gone to bed on Xmas Eve. All those hundreds and hundreds of pounds I've spent on him for the last 26 years and I get an answer like that.
My reply to his email was short and sweet.
"Jesus son, you are made of money, don't be so tight"
Regards
Bryan

The proper game I played was at level TH030. Before that I played it on the level it starts with which is, of course, extremely weak.

The sudden death levels will be the ones I normally use, but I prefer to stop and start playing as it suits me and I don't like a machine telling me "you forfeit".

I was pleased by the build quality of the machine compared with what I expect from Excalibur. The noise from the mechanism being the main drawback. Time will tell if it is really any improvement on the Mirage's poor construction.

All the best
Mike

Perhaps the first sighting in Europe?

Played one game so far at 40 moves in 30 minutes. It played OK.

Phantom regards from UK
Mike

Mike,
Congratulations. Good to hear that it played OK. What level did you use? Nice photo.
