I received an email from Raphael Neff, the president of www.chesshouse.com.  He spoke to Excalibur and they told him that the units would be arriving at the end of this month.

That was a good one Robert!

Thankfully, according to the manual, you can turn sound effects off, which I hope means you won't have to hear those cheesy effects:

From page 8 (of the Sharper Image version)

SNDEF: Use this option to turn the sound effects off.

In other news, I've found the Excalibur Phantom Force for $165.99! At Megahanson.com - Does anyone have any experience with them?

Hello
today I have tried to order one EPF from their site but I could not go further because it said that only orders within the US could be accepted

So how about we do this : for those of us who are willing to buy EPF from this site , why not ask a US member to order  , receive and then send to Europe ( or wherever else except US) ?
If OK I'll pay upfront. Even though the shipping fee is high , it would cost less than 249 $
What do you think ?

Good find, Ismenio. Although they don't say what the shipping charges are or what the delivery date will be. Also, I'm usually suspicious of online companies that don't list a physical address only a phone number.

I can't imagine why and serious chess computer would have sounds like that.

Because it is mainly pointed at the US market? We know, that they like bells and whistles there...

I'm not surprised that The Sharper Image can offer a branded version at $50 off the suggested retail price. Their sales last year were over $250 million and they have 187 retail stores in the U.S. They have tremendous purchasing leverage.

I share your concern about the quality. Most likely the units will be manufactured in China. Let's hope that Excalibur has a good quality assurance program in place at the factory. Also, this is a first-generation robotic product and may have some design flaws. (Let's hope not.)

Here is another interesting note about the new Phantom from a Sharper Image press release:

"The Sharper Image(R) Phantom! Chess ($199.95) game moves real pieces automatically. Gamers play against this most skilled opponent and most helpful teacher at 120 skill levels from beginner to master. A sonorous voice announces all moves in classic algebraic notation; moves are shown on a dot matrix display and sound effects - a galloping knight or marching pawn - add a new dimension to this ancient game."

Fortunately, the sound effects can be turned off!

Wow! That's the icing on the cake for me
Thanks for the update Marko!!!

Shaper Image must have a very good deal with Excalibur to be able to offer it for $50 less than the regular price. Also it's interesting how they got to have their name on the PDF manual that's on their site.

I am happy to see that it seems this time the thing is for real.
However, am I the only one who is a little concerned about the quality of this computer? Looking at the manual it sounds to me more and more like an advanced version of the Mirage

Best Regards,

$199.95 is really a good price but they don't give the shipping costs to Europe...

200 $ is indeed a really good price for us in Europe , that makes  at most 139 € , and provided that the shipping cost is low.
Do they offer a discount if we buy a few phantoms ?
I might buy one for me and 2 for friends before Christmas.

Hi marko et al,

I actually called Excalibur a few days ago and finally got to talk to someone there who told me the release date was Nov 10. But, I also checked with Shaper Image and they said it was "available now", that was two weeks ago. I really don't know what's going on. So, I am still interested in it but will wait until it's really "really" available

During a flight in the USA, I was surprised to see it in a catalogue with a website reference..
http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=102528935&c=10320

They are happy to sell it internationally.
As French, I can buy it for 300$.

But as you said it's not available today, I just cancelled the order at the last step (paypal).

There is no information available yet on whether it will be sold in Europe. I don't see why not, perhaps not in 2007?

The Excalibur website will not take orders from Europe, but the ChessUSA website will take orders. The problem is that they cannot do anything with those orders until they get the machines, which will not be until mid November, at the earliest.

Yes Luis not good to sell something you have not got on eBay. Now 8 more weeks at least, rather embarrassing.

Talking about selling things I see that Eric Hallsworth is having a sell-off of some new chess computers. There may be some bargains?
