According to the Excalibur website the Phantom Force is delayed until 15th November.

http://www.excaliburelectronics.net/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=EXC2

Well there's a surprise.

Will it be the usual pre Christmas scramble?

ChessUsa have accepted my order but of course not done anything with it, not even told me the postage cost. Well they probably do not know how much it weighs yet.

Maybe even Excalibur do not know.

Design Stage going well regards?

But ... I have seen this auction in ebay a week ago.

Hello

I found a video from chessbaron , http://www.chessbaron.co.uk/phantomforce.php
according to what I saw in this video , the EPF is not auto sensory and its size looks like Mephisto Master chess but a bit smaller.

Regards

Sorry, but it shows the old Mirage, not the new PF....

Excellent point Tom! I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose that is a big issue, one making my solution obsolete. I guess I'm back to my original idea that it probably is pretty tough to make this board autosensory. If it indeed is not autosensory, I will enjoy Ismenio's movies of his new Phantom, and get myself the Citrine for Christmas this year.    And thanks for the stimulating conversation!

Hi Desolat (not as bad as your name suggests, I hope ),

Sorry, I hadn't seen your response before. But if the power would be increased to allow the magnetic field to traverse a wider distance, the field will traverse further in all directions. It's imaginable that the risk of attracting chessmen that should not be moved becomes greater (as can be seen in the picture).

With best regards,

tom

I'm an electronics design engineer, not a mechanical engineer, but I should think that maybe one could increase the current to the electromagnet to allow the magnetic field to traverse a wider distance. Further, I guess the reed switches can be set to be "ignored" during robotic magnet activity, so the electromagnet does not cause false readings during movement. Just a bit more logic is needed to accomplish this (or a few more lines of code in the firmware), plus a stronger current/electromagnet. Hmm...

Hello Desolat! I'm sorry for the late reply but I've been away for weeks and only now getting back to the regular routine, which sadly, doesn't mean I have much time for the chess computers but I'll hang around here.

To answer your question: Yes! As soon as my unit arrives I'll post many details including videos of it! Stay tuned

Best regards,

Ismenio

PS: To Meca: I got your message, but I tried to reply to your email and it bounced back! Please email me again using another account

Another question I wonder if anyone knows. Is it pressure sensory or autosensory? I'm guessing it is just a modern Phantom so it will be pressure sensory unfortunately. Further, I'm thinking it would be quite difficult to make an autosensory board with a moving magnet underneath as well. However, I happen to think autosensory is extremely cool, and still want a Citrine for this reason (I don't think much of the Grandmaster). Autosensory would be a slam dunk for me in favor of the Phantom Force.

Ismenio, will you perhaps host a nice in-depth review of your new Phantom Force when you get it? A video with sound would be nice too. I'm wondering how loud the mechanics of it will be while my two small children are sleeping.

I wonder if the use of reed switches can be combined with the electromagnet used for moving the chessmen (in order to be politically correct, in the rest of the text to be read as chesspersons ) over the board.

The actual 'board' in robotic chess computers is very thin: the distance between the electromagnet and the chessmen canot be too wide, or else the attractive force between them would become too weak for the chessmen to be moved over the board. I wonder if the layer that contains the reed switches would not make this distance too great.

Has it ever been done?

ChessUSA have this under their auto sensory section so we can only hope

Yep. I noticed this as well. I still think it would be tough to manage autosensory with a moving magnet under the board where the sensors should be. But I'm crossing my fingers.

Not yet Bryan but I probably will. When a few retailers have them.

Just before Xmas

They should just be starting to make them in China now?

More Phantom than Force regards

Hi Bryan,

I will not try. Given the poor reliability reputation of the Mirage, I will not order the Excalibur Phantom from the US ; if Niggemann sells it, then I'll order it immediately.

best regards,
Alain

Hi TurboKing
I have passed on inside info about the Phantom and I cannot see why my contacts are wrong.
I hope they are wrong and I hope that it plays at 3000 ELO and I hope that it will be the most reliable chess computer ever made just for the sake of my fellow chess computer enthusiasts who will also like me pay a weeks wages for yet another chess computer.
I hope, I hope but............................

Hello
I really don't understand why Excalibur make so cheap and weak chess computers

because you can make more money with them than with strong and expensive ones?

And that's, what the stockholders expect from their company...
