Thanks for the results Nick and well done Hans- Juergen. How do you manage to play 72 games that fast?

My prediction for the least predictable group is L.

Prediction crazy regards
Mike

Hi Mike,
You might be right Group L.  Group N looks like being unbelievable crazy too  .  But I will keep quiet for now until all the games have been played

I think Hans-Juergen has 8 hands what do you call that Octopedal or Octopus?.. lol

All the best

Hi everyone,

Hans-Juergen has completed Group I in a world record time    Here are the results....

2008 U1400 Active Chess Green Group I Champion

There is no question that Saitek Cosmos thoroughly lived up to the pre-match predictions for it to win Group I.

2008 U1400 Active Chess Green Group I Runner-Up

Lexibook Chessman Pro also showed that it is worthy of it's second place finish in Group I.

Here is the U1400 Green Group I Final Table and interim Tables

Group I Statistics

And here are the results of our Prediction Game for Group I:

Group I Predictions

Group I Scorecard

I am hoping that Hans-Juergen will post a little about his experiences in Group I.  More chinese water torture might be required ....

All the best,

Hans-Juergen and Nick

Hi Nick

Great work !!

I do like those results.

Tom fooled me with the Scisys Executive. A little while ago he posted games that were so woeful that I thought only Mickey and Donald could possibly be worse. In one game Executive was a Queen, Rook and a few other pieces up and still could not checkmate a King hiding behind one pawn. But I guess you see a few such games.

It's a marathon not a sprint regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

Yes I wondered if Tom's Fritz 1 Ply games have influenced some of the picks    I believe Tom plays most of his games at 10sec/move which can be misleading when comparing to 30sec/move.

As you can see from the example against Novag Alto, SciSys Executive is capable of finding a checkmate

Hi everyone,

An now finally here are the Final Standings and Stats for Group M.

2008 U1400 Active Chess Green Group M Champion

2008 U1400 Active Chess Green Group M Runner-UP

I think Excalibur LCD Chess Model 375-CS-2 has shown that it fully deserves to be Champion of Group M.

Also great comeback by CXG Enterprise S to finish in Second Place after a disasterous first nine rounds!

Here is the Final U1400 Green Group M Table

Group M Stats

And finally here is the current Scorecard for the Prediction Game.

4r3/p1pn3p/3k2p1/5p2/1p1P4/2bBP3/P4PPP/2RK3R w - - 0 24

This is what I believe to be the most critical position in the game.  Novag Alto had several good missed opportunities to finish this game off quickly.  Novag Alto still has the advantage but now needs to play carefully.  Kc2 or g3 would both be good moves in this position.  But this is how it continues....

24. a4?!

This move is doubtful.  Obviously Novag Alto does not read this position too well.  Now it is time for Excalibur King Arthur to shine in the Endgame.

This has been unbelievable.  CXG Enterprise S should have won this game a long time ago.  Now all Excalibur 375-CS-2 needs to play is 54. ... Ke8! and the game is drawn.  But after struggling throughout the game here is what is played instead.

Kc7?

Finally Enterprise S takes advantage of it's opponents mistake ...

1r1q1rk1/1pp1n1pp/2n2p2/p2p1b2/3P3B/PQP1PN2/5PPP/2KR1B1R w - - 0 13

Mephisto Junior needs to win this game in order to have a chance of making the top 4.  Only the top 4 will move on to the next stages of this Tournament.  However Novag Alto is not an easy opponent to beat and is also looking for a Top 4 spot and plays this game very nicely.

SciSys Executive has the advantage but with 30. ... Rd5! everything is still up in the air but here is what Novag Alto plays.....

g5??

This move was bad.  Now SciSys Executive can finally show that it also has the tools to beat a good opponent.

31. fxg6 a4 32. Bf6 a3 33. Ra5 Qf8 34. Qxc6 Qd6 35. Qc8+ Rd8

42. gxf8=Q h5 43. Qg7# 1-0

SciSys Executive playing at Level 3 was for me the biggest surprise in the Group.  It played all it's games tough and fully deserves this win against Novag Alto.

best regards

Hi everyone,

Group M is complete and here is a report on the first 9 Rounds:

Table after 9 Rounds:

Already in the first game, we have an encounter between two of the favorites in Group M.

Group M - Round 1 - Game 1

[Event "U1400 Green Stage 1 Group M"]
[Site "Active Chess 0:30/1"]
[Date "2008.04.27"]
[Round "1"]
[White "CXG Enterprise S, LV A7."]
[Black "Excalibur King Arthur Deluxe, LV 16."]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "B12"]
[WhiteElo "1390"]
[BlackElo "1390"]

2kr3r/1b5p/2qbp1p1/p7/Pp1p1PP1/3B2KQ/NPP4P/R4R2 b - - 0 25

CXG Enterprise S, has problems in this game.  King Arthur has a lot pressure on the King's postion.

Qxa4?

But Excalibur King Arthur reads the position all wrong.  With 25. ... Rhf8! King Arthur's position would be very strong and winning.

26. Nc3 Qc6 27. Ne4 a4
28. Nxd6+ Rxd6 29. Bxg6 Qg2+ 30. Qxg2 Bxg2 31. Kxg2 hxg6 32. Rxa4 Rb6 33. Ra8+

8/8/4p1p1/1k4P1/1P1p1PK1/8/1P5P/8 b - - 0 42

The position is now drawn.  King Arthur previously missed all it's good opportunities to win and now has to watch out and not make any further errors.

d3??

Another error.  This time  a losing one,  Kc4 would have ensured the draw.

43. Kf3 d2 44. Ke2 d1=Q+ 45. Kxd1 Kxb4

Excalibur King Arthur forced the issue throughout the game but could not find a way to win.  Now it looks like Novag Alto managed to salvage a draw.  But there are more surprises...

Kd4??

Wow what a mistake this loses straightaway..  60. ... Kc6 would have ensured the draw!

61. a5 Kd5 62. Kb5 Kd6

8/8/3k4/PK6/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 63

King Arthur and LCD 375-CS-2 required 72 and 73 moves respectively to beat SciSys Executive in the previous rounds.  This time SciSys Executive makes life hard for CXG Enterprise S.

At some point CGX Enterprise S needs to push the h-pawn and a-pawn and the game should be won.  But here is what happens:

Rc2+ 59. Kb4 Ra2 60. Rd3 Ke6 61. Rc3 Kd5 62. Rc5+ Ke6 63. Re5+ Kf6 64. Re3 Ra1

84. Re3 Ra2 {Draw by repetition of position} 1/2-1/2

This was a surprisingly good result for SciSys Executive!

A report on the final 9 Rounds of Group M will follow soon....

All the best

Hi Mike,

Thanks!  I have added your predictions to my last Post.
I still require your Final 8 predictions to complete the chart.

I will start the game reporting on Sunday, therefore there is still time for anyone else who wishes to play the Prediction Game!

This game now has a real international flavor to it

Great stuff Nick. I will certainly make a fool of myself and join in your Prediction Game. When do the predictions have to be in?

The Active Chess Elo list and information is superb. The first realistic Elos for many of these machines that have ever been published. I will put the SciSys ones on the Scisys 1979-1986 webpage.

Good luck with the tournament
Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for wanting to play the game   There is no rush I can wait 2 Weeks or more if needed before we begin to report on any Groups.

Yes I also think the new Aktivliste looks great!

In order to make this new U1400 Green Tournament a little more interesting and fun, here is a little Prediction Game that anyone who is interested can join in and play.  This is a challenge to Experts and Non-Experts!

There is so little information about many of the machines playing that it really would be fun to see how close the predictions are compared to the results at the end of the Tournament.

Hans-Juergen and I tried to predict in the last Tournament and we both failed miserably  but had a lot of fun following our predictions.  We both had better chances to win a Lottery then our predictions the last time around.

Therefore since we both want to see if we can do a better job this time, we would also like to extend this challenge to anyone who is interested.

There are no prizes to be won this is meant just for fun!

So we challenge all you Experts and Non-Experts to play this game

Here are the Rules:

1) You have to pick the ranking order of each Group
2) You have to pick 8 machines that you think will reach the Quarter Finals (Top Eight)
3) You have to predict who will be U1400 Green Champion.

Here is how your predictions will be scored:

Example

Hans-Juergen correctly predicts all the machines in Group I = 180 Points
Nick has 1,2,3 and 6,7,8,9 correct = 140 Points
(10 each Bonus for 1,2,3 and 6,7,8,9)
Micha = 5 correct = 50 points plus Bonus 30 points (7,8,9) = 80 points

Since we have already stuck our necks out here our predictions:

........and may God help us!

All the best

Nick

Hello Nick

Je me tiens Ă  votre disposition !

All the best !

Olivier

Hi Oliver,

You are very welcome to play and you can certainly play the Supermini in Group N.  But this means that you will have to agree to meet on-line to play 16 Group Games with me.  If this is acceptable then please send me an e-mail or a PM so that we can work out the arrangements.

With regards to Sargon 2.5, I have a problem about entering it at the moment.  My Radio Shack 1680L has started to work again.  It had batteries inside it for a long time and maybe it caused it to freeze the Sensors the other day.  Today after plugging it into a 7.5V -/+ Adapter it started to work again after about a minute of me just pressing a1 and b1 keys.  New batteries now also work with it.  So it seems to be good again.

I would prefer to not play the Sargon 2.5 because the 1680L should definitely be more suitable for U1400, unless another new Group is started and I do not have enough suitable machines at the moment to start more Groups.

Peter (Fluppio) is playing several games with MGS Sargon/Steinitz/Morphy etc so in the next update in a few months the Sargon 2.5 will be included in the list anyway.  Also when U1400 finishes there are plans to start U1600 and include the best U1400 machines in the future U1600 Tournament therefore Sargon 2.5 will find it's place in the list later, alone and probably also in a combination with Gruenfeld/Capablanca.

So unless a new Group starts or there is another machine failure,  I would prefer to keep Sargon 2.5 for other future Tournaments.

All the best

Nick

All the best !

PS : Encore désolé pour le langage !

Hi Oliver

You may have your wish yet    I am having problems with my Radio Shack 1680L so I might have to replace it in Group K.

Yes the thought behind not playing Sargon 2.5 was Wiki because I based pretty much all of the contestants on Wiki.

I realize that in the Aktivlist Novag Mentor 16 is showing well above ELO 1400.  But based on Wiki and other experiences I believe Mentor 16 fits into U1400.

Are you interested in playing a Group? If you are then maybe you can have your Sargon 2.5 included in a Group?  The only thing to consider if you want to play a Group is that the Group has to be quite well balanced with good and weaker machines otherwise a good machine will be hurt because it might not make the Knock-out stages later.

Yes with Mephisto II, Cosmic and Mentor 16 you have picked some favorites to win this Tournament.  But this is by no means a certainty   I am sure there will be several surprises.  Picking the 4 semi finalists maybe like picking the correct numbers in a lottery.  There is still too little game information about these machines.

I have a just for fun competition if you want to join in and play.

I will post the details about this competition in my next post.

All the best
