No, I'm not going to buy this machine, no matter what the features are, such as a robot arm or metallic voice or whatever. The main reason for me is that this chess computer just seems to be too weak.

I'm very dissapointed about the development of cheap modern chess computers. Their strength always stays at the same level and no progress seems to have been made within the past twenty years nor will probably any ever be made.

The high time of chess computers were the early nineties, but then unfortunately the personal computers got stronger and people left our dear machines in order to sit in front of dreadful glassy screens! That's high treason!

I suggest that the inventors of personal computers be hung up by their necks on the next tree and everyone who followed them as well!!!

Then business men would change their minds again and start developing good new chess computers again, worth their money.

Hi Ricardo
Arena on a Tablet PC that hides under Le Grande Citrine. When I get round to modyfing it, it will be incorporated into the casing.

Mephisto,

Are these engines inside of your citrine hardware?
How did you put them inside?
or just playing citrine against them through arena?

Mephisto,

Your Grande Citrine looks fantastic. So the computer is inside the new case too? That is a true work of art. The shape looks elegant... the little drawer with the display... It just looks so refined. It puts the original Citrine with its tether LCD display and square silhouette to shame making it seem crude and boorish.

Novag should take notice!

I have Zappa Mexico II, Rybka 2.2 and Hiarcs 11 engines all playing on my Le Grande Citrine so what could be better than that?

my two cents, I still can't fathom why Novag didn't put the star diamond program in the citrine. Now that would be a nice little machine.  tony

Hi Alain and Ismenio,

Alain, I'm not saying that they shouldn't have made the 2Robot, just that I don't feel the excitement that most chess computer enthusiasts do about it. You're right about it being appealing to children. If I received this as a Christmas present when I was ten years old, I'd be thrilled. But as an adult I would've liked it to be a bit more elegant and sophisticated. Also the price is on the high side here in the U.S. Initially the word was that it was going to be priced at $100 or so. Now it looks like it is going to be $200 and that puts it at a price point where it should be elegant and sophisticated. At $100, you could live with it being what it is. At $200 you expect more.

Ismenio, I didn't mean to rain on your parade but the new 2Robot seems like Novag trying to come up with a new gimmick to sell its old chess computer technology to save some money, sort of like they did with the Citrine where they put the Obsidian inside the old Universal Board. They didn't put the top notch computer in there and it was a let down but I still find the Citrine appealing. The Obsidian is still a strong program. I guess now there isn't a lot of money in the chess computer market so they are trying to enter the toy chess market that Excalibur seems to have done well in.

The only computer that is exciting is the Revelation from Ruud but lord knows what that must've cost...

Ciao,
D.

It will appeal to kids and probably some collectors who'll hope that in 20 years it will sell for exhorbitant prices like the original Robot but this thing seems like a toy.

NO, real collectors and dedicated machine lovers do not think about the price the machine could have in 20 years. There are people who make money by buying/selling chess computers but they are not collectors, they could do the same with many other things.

Why doesn't someone make a really nice wooden set sort of like the Citrine except with a built in LCD that runs off of batteries and sells for a reasonable price. That would be best. Something where you could send the game score sheets over to the computer via USB to anaylze and something where you could also use it to interface with ICS and Fritz (a more practical version of the DGT board that can play AND announce its or your online opponents moves via LEDs).

yes, that would be great ! but it is a different target than the 2robot... so I guess we would have both

Come on people, get real.

There is one thing that people who criticise the poor level of the 2robot always forget : nobody would play a serious chess game against a robot ! but I am sure that my 8 years son will like to play against the 2Robot, and this machine can bring to chess more children than a Resurrection II.

Once again, there is enough room for several chess machines, there is no ideal one which would fill all needs, even the dream wooden board you mentioned before (and which I would buy too) has drawbacks.
So even if its level is pool, I think that the 2Robot is a very good thing both for machine lovers and for chess and I thank Novag for doing something in this market.

Best regards,
Alain

Hi all,
i have this chess computer already in pre by Niggemann. Last Saturday i get a mail and Niggeman told me that the 2Robot is perhaps end of August/begin September available. Niggeman has now one 2Robot in their showrooms for testing and also a "new" video on their websites...

Still waiting Regards

Thanks for the reply folks.
The results as of 07/13/2008:

I really liked marsalone post (Daniel) for its insight. I see that other than Ruud Martin's chess computers, we don't have really anything that are as elegant, powerful and feature-rich as the mighty Tasc from the 90s.

With that said, I'm getting it because I'm just a "gadget" guy and simply enjoy playing with them. So I'm seeing it not as a "great chess computer" but I guess more of a great toy, which is kind of sad when I think of it in a deeper sense   (Thanks a lot Daniel! I was a lot happier before I was enlightened  )

Best regards,

Ismenio

An emphatic "No Way!"

The New Robot from Novag is pathetic. It will appeal to kids and probably some collectors who'll hope that in 20 years it will sell for exhorbitant prices like the original Robot but this thing seems like a toy.

Based on the video, it moves like a turtle and based on the specs for the machine, it'll be rather weak like the Keychain LCD Chess from Excalibur. I expect a keychain to play a weak game but something this expensive should really play better and should look a lot better. The new Excalibur Phantom/Mirage computer is noisy and slow as well.

The 2Robot is a sad attempt at a chess computer for 2008. Maybe twenty five years ago it would've been something to get excited about but now? Come on people, get real.

Hi Ismenio,

I did not try to pre-order it as I did for the Citrine (Niggemann) because I'd prefer to get it in a local store because of its moving parts (easier to bring back in case of problems).
The Citrine was not imported in France for more than one year (and it is very expensive here) but I hope it will be different for the 2robot because of the lower price and the fun of the robotic arm.
If it is still available in France around Christmas, then I'll go through Niggemann.

best regards,
Alain

Feel free to comment on your choice
Did you pre-order it? Are you waiting for specials? eBay?
