Ismenio,

we wait and see...I know from experiance that is difficult to develop something which works properly and than reach the break even point with a reasonable price...you need a lot of customers for this.

But of course I would be one

I hope that won't be the case Christian!
If they really aim at the goals outlined in the document, their number 1 objective is to keep it at a reasonable price:

Mechatronic Chess Playing System

Objectives
Develop a low cost robotic arm for chess playing
Interface with computerised chess boards and software based chess games
Introduce new technologies into Hong Kong toy industry
Robotics and mechatronics technologies
Cartesian trajectory motion planning
User-friendly robot programming language

Technology Involved
Enhance the fun of playing with computerised chess games
Able to pick up various sizes of chess pieces
Enable chess games to be played remotely through Internet or other communication media
Advantages

Ismenio,

this device really looks great and solid, but it also looks unpayable

I wonder whether there will be a market for a computer like this (with market I do not mean some twelve crazy collectors ).

Updates on this project! They have a video clip of the robot in action! It looks pretty promising. In WindowsMedia format here:

And there's a 1 page PDF with a quick highlight of the project here:
