Thanks a BUNCH Guys!!  At least now I have a good idea what it is and with that Manual download I can test it too!!
Once I clean the dust off and test it is will go up on eBay...
Thanks Again!
Russ...

Hi Russ,

The required AC adapter is 9 volts DC, positive tip, at least 300 ma. When you test the unit make sure all the LED display segments work. I had one unit where 4 of the LEDs were out. The unit uses a strange 9 (not the usual 7) segment, 4-digit display. The manual has a small test game.

Good luck with it.

Best regards,
Marko

I have run across a JS&A Computer Chess Champion Mk I and am trying to dig up more info on it... I don't have manual or box, just the unit.
I'm curious about manufacture dates, and company info.
And i'm curious about it's possible value.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Russ...

Hello Russ,

You can get a PDF of the manual from Alain's excellent site:
http://alain.zanchetta.free.fr/docs/Novag/NovagMk1US.pdf

Also, there was an interesting discussion about the MK I in this thread:

Hi Russ

As Robert states your JS&A is actually a Novag Chess Champion Mk I which was sold in the USA by a company called JS&A. This company was owned by one Joseph Sugarman who sold electronics products by mail order from a catalogue during the 1970s and 80s. Sugarman had a somewhat colourful history of selling and if you Google him you will find motivational books on selling and a number of court cases about his products. There was for instance an important case brought by Atari over a ROM copier and video games!

An earlier court case involved the JS&A chess computer and a very early example of computer program piracy! You can read about it on my website here -
http://www.chesscomputeruk.com/html/scisys_and_novag___the_early_y.html
There are links to the court case and appeal notes which are interesting snippets of chess computer history in themselves.

I bought a JS&A myself on eBay last month - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250304690016&ssPageName=STRK
and will be adding a photo or two to the webpage.

Here is an article from Popular Mechanics May 1979 which enthusiasts of the Oldies may enjoy. It is a comparative test between the JS&A, Chess Challenger 10, Boris and Compuchess. One of the earliest such articles I have come across.

CC1 regards
Mike

Does it look like this?

There seem to exist some "branded" versions (like the brown "Quelle"(a big german department store company) and perhaps JS&A is one of them.

The value of the Novag version is near to zero. I don't know about your JS&A; if it is rare, maybe a collector would pay a little bit more...
