that doesn't work either, the computer will think about it's move as black. the only work around for either color is to double press the enter for the color you want to get a instant response. trouble is, I don't know if it's actually playing that particular selected book and you can't tell where the book ends. Oh well, I guess its full book or nothing. like I said, no one has come forward with 2250XL with the alternate books that function properly. I think they were all built with this bugaboo in them.    regards, Tony

Just for the record, my 2250XL also has "the bug."  Only "Full Book" works.

I also tried to reset (using batteries) and it had no effect on the use of the other books.

I guess all 2250XL's have that glitch in them, at least I have'nt heard of one without it. Thanks Marko.
regards. Tony

Hi Tony,

Wouldn't pressing the "Enter" key (on black's move) force the 2250XL to immediately follow the book openings or am I missing something?

Best regards,
Marko

my full book also plays correctly. It's the active, passive, and tourenment that search for moves from the beginning. have you tried all of your books to see if they respond instantly while in a book line?  Tony

Hi Tony,

My 2250XL acts like yours - only the full book responds instantly. All the other books (off, active, passive and tournament) go immediately into "thinking mode."

Marko, please explain how you are doing that. I have tried it and it has no effect all on the books. what mode are you in? power on or off when you reset? details pleeeeeze.    regards, Tony

Hi Tony,

All I am doing is pressing the ACL button (with a straightened paperclip) while the 2250XL is turned on using a 9 volt, 300 mA, negative tip, DC adapter (not original) and no batteries installed.  Like the manual says, after a reset, the computer beeps, each of the LEDs on the rank and file lights in sequence and the display shows all the pieces in their starting positions. I use all the defaults and don't change any options (other than the level) and the opening book seems to work fine. Pressing "new game" starts a new random book opening. Once, after a reset, it went into "thinking mode" after the first move but all the other times the reset caused the opening book to work. Anything else you want me to try?

Best regards,
Marko

Hi Marko,
So does sticking a pin in the reset, actually kick-start the other Book modes to work??

Al

Hello hypersonic (and Tony),

Yes, resetting my 2250XL (ACL hole on bottom) causes the Book Modes to work! Pressing INFO after black moves shows the expected white countermove to follow the book.

Yusti, I have never been able to have my 2250XL play book moves unless the "full  book" is turned on. the other books all are useless. when turned on they must think for each move. reset will not clear this problem. Others have reported the same glitch. if there's a fix, I would love to know about it.  regards, Tony

Is most definately isn't a Cougar or GK-2100.  I've owned both, & they both have quite different programatic options, & both  lost to the 2250XL nearly every time.

I would call it a "close relative"

Some points:
If you play 1.f3, GK2100 and RS2250 both reach 8 resp. 9 plies after 36 resp. 193 secs.

And if you compare the BT2630 results (Saitek President/GK2100) you can see it clearly...
http://www.schachcomputer.info/BT2630-1024.htm look at page 4

No clones, but brothers...
And maybe the RS2250 is the big brother with more knowledge?

Robert

Yes Yuste07 the 2250XL has a 20,000 book.

Hello everybody,

I have a dude, I own a Radio Shack champion 2250XL and I'm trying change the opening book style, for example "active book". I done but the problem is that my computer think in the first movement. (1. e4 and computer thinking)

A Similar problem happen in passive book and tournament book. Is it  possible? Is that Radio Shack 2250XL only have one opening book (full)? or my computer is broken?

yuste07

Hi yuste07,

Make sure that the 2250XL is not in the "Study Position" mode. You can reset the 2250XL by sticking a paperclip into the ACL hole in the bottom of the computer.

Is very curious this machine. Is true that RS 2250XL have 20.000 mov in the opening library?

Anybody had compared the opening library with other openings books of GK-2100 clones, for example Cougar, TC100, Centurion, etc...?

Thank you for ours answers,

Salu2

Hi,
Yes similar to what Rob said.
The 2250XL does have a bug that simply means the book is either 'ON' or 'OFF'.
When set to 'Full Book' it has 20,000 moves to play with - not to shabby.
When 'OFF' it starts from scratch.
When set to one of the other modes (Tournament, Active, Passive), it seems to revert to 'OFF'.
However this hasn't been thoroughly tested. It 'may' display subtle hints of the other modes, but so weakly as to not be really seen..  Who knows?

Despite this, the 2250XL is a quirky machine with its own distinct & unique character, that sets it apart such that no Saitek counterpart has ever really been confirmed.
It has been seen to beat machines (with same game settings), seemingly far stronger. - Its seems to have had a sprinkling of 'bespoke dust', from either Saitek on behalf of RS, or by RS themselves (doubtful). But it is RS's Flagship chess board.

Enjoy.

the good news:
no, it's not broken!

the bad news:
it's a bug in the 2250XL program! You can't use any other than the default book...
