Hi Dick/Mike,

what would be a reasonable price for one of these machines? (With the original pieces)
I remember one has been sold recently at ebay.de for 500 Euros...
But I do not know whether this was an extremly high or low price.

Thanks,

Christian

Do you know something of the reliability of this computer? I mean does it function correctly more than five games in a row?

Viele Grüße,

Christian,

I, so far, have 3 Phantoms - one Eyeball (model 6126) and 2 regular (model 6100).  They all work perfectly each and every time, if they are using the pieces that come with them.  Some of us have experimented with using other magnetic pieces, as there are always Phantoms for sale without pieces.  So far the only other pieces I have discovered that work perfectly are those from the old Boris/Sargon MGS 2.5 system.

Sometimes, when used with other pieces, the pieces will get in the way of each other, or not move quite properly.  This is not a problem with the Phantom board, though.

I have never seen one that didn't work properly, but have heard of a couple.

Some of them are noiser than others, but it seems to be a very reliable system.

Mike,

I didn´t know that the Phantom was rated this high...this must be quite a strong machine. In fact I never saw one and I never played against one...maybe this should change.

The Phantoms must be fairly reliable because they have stood up to all the abuse Ismenio and Dick have thrown at them.

Seriously though I think it is a reliable machine of its type. I have one which does not work which I bought with the intention of trying to mend it. But I have another Phantom and a Phantom Eyeball and they have shown no sign of problems yet. They will happily play against themselves all day without any human intervention. I also have four Milton Bradleys (Milton, Phantom and Grandmaster) which use the same design which are also fine.

I would not be so confident about the Excalibur Mirage. That machine gets bad marks for build quality and there are stories about defects even in brand new ones. I keep mine in its box.

As for arrogant, I don't think so. You playing me, would be like me playing a CC10, which would be like a CC10 playing a CC3 etc etc. One of the beauties of chess is that there is no hiding place. Your ability, or lack of it, is there for all to see but you can still find plenty of equal opponents and enjoy the game just the same.

Viele Grüße
Mike

Hi folks,

I wonder what is so special about these phantoms...
What is the advantage of having a machine which draws the pieces itself but doesn´t know how to play chess....

But I forgot, this is in fact also the case with most human chess players...

Joking regards

Well as you know the Phantom has the same program as the Par Excellence, Elite Avant Garde v.1 and Designer 2100 with an Elo of 1835. That is good enough to beat 90+% of chess players, perhaps even the majority of players that play regularly in chess clubs. I am really a 1700 Elo player, at best, but I got over 1900 Elo on FICS for a while and was surprised to find I was in the top 10% of registered players on there.

So you are looking at the Phantom from the high level of a 2075 Elo player, rather than an average chess player.

Of course the Phantom is a strong chess computer by most peoples standards but mainly it is a novelty. A showpiece and talking point. Something to amuse when the person is not in the mood or cannot play serious chess. It is different so many collectors want one. Kurt Kispert has added to the enthusiasm by his comments and others have followed.

Could I interest you in one?

All the best
Mike

For a modest number of Euros Steffen can do you a new identity and Ebay ID. That should keep your secrets safe.................................

Until the next Phantom comes up.

Mike,

I just checked my pocket book and I don't have any Euros.

I need to find somebody in the States to do this for me.

Don't you get it Mike? He's bidding on it mostly because he contacted the seller and found out that he has a Fidelity Designer Mach III pawn and he promised he'll give it to Dick if he wins!
