chesster III and chubbyupchuck, thank you for your replies.

So to sum it up, when buying from overseas:

- some extra shipping cost (as opposed to buying domestically)
- possible bank transfer charges if the seller does not accept PayPal as payment method
- possible currency exchange charges

Serendipity!

I was about to ask the same questions, but from the UK.  A German colleague suggested that most Germans do not use PayPal.  He explained that you cannot link PayPal to a bank account in Germany (regulatory reasons?) and few Germans have credit cards (cultural?).  As a consequence Germans tend to use bank transfers.

I assume that this is the "transfer" type listed on most eBay auctions?

Does anyone have experience of "transfering" cash to Germany.  Is it possible, if a currency conversion sits in the way, and how much does it cost?

Cheers

Chubby

Hi Kostea,

1. What method of payment should I use ?

The best (and imho saviest) method is paypal. You have to ask the seller first if paypal is offered, but mostly it is no problem.

2. What method of shipping would be best ?

You're right. DHL is fast and offers secured shipping. Of course the price depends on the weight. Here's a short extract from DHL.de with the shipping costs from Germany to US.

Zone 3
min. 15 x 11 x 1 cm
max. 120 x 60 x 60 cm

  5 kg  34,00 EUR
10 kg  44,00 EUR
20 kg  64,00 EUR

Best.....chesster

This is my first post so please be gentle

I live in the US, and considering buying a dedicated chess computer from EBAY Germany (ebay.de), which has far more and better choices than what I would find on EBAY USA (ebay.com).

I have a couple of questions for anybody living in US who has purchased items from EBAY Germany.

1. What method of payment should I use ?

- I checked some listings and was surprised to see that Paypal was not listed as a payment option and the Paypal logo is not present on the listing page. I have purchased stuff from Europe (not from EBAY) and paid through WESTERN UNION money order, but those companies I bought from were reliable, and the risk of being scammed would have been practically zero. But I'm not so convinced it would be a good idea to send money through international money order to a person whom I do not know.

2. What method of shipping would be best ?

- I think that DHL has a 35 euro shipping option to US, and sounds like a good idea, but I'm open to any suggestions.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and reply with advices. I promise next time I will ask more interesting questions.
