Blimey, I would never have thought it was so complicated.  So, a follow up question.  My Mephisto I, IIb did not come with a manual.  I can see German and French manuals for the Mephisto I, IX and II on Eric's site.  Given my Mephisto is a I, IIb which manual do you think is the most appropriate to consult?  And does anyone know if an English language version exists?

Thanks for your continued patience.

I just checked my ESB II module in the special Esb II Brikett
the Esb II module will only work in this Brikett(and in the ESB II wooden board of course)

this brikett is the same as Chubby's and Erics version II brikett
that is to say..it is a Version II Brikett with no arrow keys and no white and black boxes

Probing Deeper Regards
Steve

Perhaps Eric
i know my version II brikett came with the Mephisto II program module and it was the normal 3.5 Mhz(bought new when released for sale)

my Mephisto III program module came in the Version III Brikett and runs at 6.1Mhz(bought  new when released for sale)

The Plot Thickens Regards
Steve

Steve,
a version without White-Black keys is a Mephisto II 3.5 MHz and the other version is a Mephisto II at 6.1 MHz.

Is this a coincidence?

Hi Eric And Chubby

interestingly ...
it seems Eric's version II brikett also does not have the square boxes(White-Black keys)

perhaps there are TWO version II Briketts??
a version II(a) and a version II(b)

if so ..we can now say you have a Mephisto I Program module and a version II(b) Brikett

II(b) or not II(b) Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the blindingly quick response.  So it looks as though I probably have a Mephisto I program module, perhaps with a Mephisto II brickett.  The brickett does not have arrows, in fact it also does not have the square symbols on the 9 and 0 keys visible in...

If anything the 9 and 0 keys are more like those on the Mephisto I visible here...

Although as I mentioned I also have standby switch rather than the grille visible in this photo.

Nice set of photos by the way, very helpful.

Cheers

Chubby.

Hi Chubby
actually your question is not naive because the different Briketts and program modules can be quite confusing
first of all ..please be aware that ALL program modules can be used in all Briketts(the ESB II program module is a special case not discussed here)
that is to say.. the Mep I,II and III program modules can each be used in the three different briketts
now...the II and III program modules had the words..Mephisto II(III).. engraved on the back of the modules while the Mephisto I had nothing written.
so my guess is you have a Mep I program module

as to the Briketts
as you mentioned ..since you have the standby switch this eliminates the Brikett version I
To determine if you have a Version II or version III brikett
look to see if you have ARROWS on the 9 and 0 keys
if so.. you have a version III Brikett
if no arrows.. a version II Brikett

you can see the differences between the two Briketts here:

Version III Brikett:

Version II Brikett:

Thick As A Brikett Regards

Please excuse my naive question.  I have purchased a Mephisto brick.  However, I am not sure which version it is.  It has a replaceable program module and standby switch which I think discounts it being a Mephisto 1.  I cannot see any module numbers on the program unit, as described by Overtom, so I thought it was a 1X.  However, the model number on the unit and program module is DH4005 and Googling this throws up an auction for a Mephisto 2.

Thanks for any help.
