Hello,

By a long way Mephisto.

Much like what Ismenio said, quality, reliability, fantastic modular system with lots of choice and they have made some very strong programs. Also memories of my first real chess computers.

Hello dear friends

My vote:

Saitek for the Renaissance: The beauty of the chessboard, the number of modules, the LCD screen and his features.

But i like the fidelity Elite A/S too for the quality of the wooden board.

I find it hard to give an outspoken opinion on any one manufacturer.

To give an example: I like Fidelity because they were the very first and some of their computers were a pleasure to the eye. I hate them for making some overpriced but shoddy affairs. For instance, many of their computers have battery compartment covers that break too easily. The tradition of making pretty but too perishable machines seems to be continued by Excalibur. But they make them a lot more inexpensive than Fidelity used to do (see the discussion about their LCD Chess Express).

According to some theories, I should love Novag because they made my first computer, the Chess Champion Mark 1, but I don't; they extracted one fifth of my monthly income for a computer that is probably the weakest I have ever owned:

On the other hand, Novag's small machines like Jasper and Solo are pleasant companions on a train journey. There are hardly any machines that are so small and easy to use.

I liked Saitek because they usually made machines that were sturdy and not very expensive. But I don't like the fact that they used the name of Mephisto for producing second-rate machines (see the discussion about Senator and its strange tendency towards unnecessary draws).

To summarize, to me things are not as black-and-white as the colours of the chessmen might suggest.

Best regards,

tom

Hi,

I voted for Novag, because Mr Kittinger make good programs since many years(Savant, constellation, super-constellation, Forte, Scorpio and Wchess/Sapphire).
The Novag's hardware is good (far better than Fidelity, as good as Mephisto for the chess computers I have).

Scisys, the word turbo, and the funky graphs give them a feeling of POWAH! Oh, the 6502 is a nice chip too

I voted Fidelity too -- simply because of their Elite A/G series. They're very fine computers. Mephisto Exclusive or Muenchen would be second (the sound of the A/G is nicer) and Tasc third (it's almost perfect but the pieces are too light for my taste).

Avantgarde Regards,
Martin

I voted Tasc because they build the most sophisticated devices and I really adore THE KING!

I voted for Fidelity.  Certainly most of the other makes have models that I desire, but Fidelity is the only maker that I want to own an example of every one they made.  They had the most varied line of chess computers, and were the first.

I voted Mephisto, considering the overall quality, durability, crafmanship, programs and other features. Fidelity would probably be my 2nd option, mostly because of the robots!

Most of us seem to have particular makes which we favour, or others that we dislike. Perhaps your favourite make is the chess computer you started with. Some put the emphasis on playing strength. Others on features, the quality of the wooden boards or the feel of the machine. National allegiance may play a part.

The choice is yours. Of course the list is not complete but it will give some idea of the relative popularity of your favourite makes. Please vote, and give reasons if you wish.
