i,m afraid this unit is defective. i,ve taken whole unit apart. looked for cold solder joints etc. unpluged both foil connects. the only time i can get any change is when i hold down sound button then unit starts ticking then sometimes not always mostly not it flashes rank and file led back and forth . you can try and acknowledge a piece move but it wont respond. once i got it to switch to level 2 but still nothing. thanks for help steve.  james

The normal start up would have the A1 Square steadily lit and NOT flashing
it makes no difference if the pieces are in place or not
this is also true if any of the three add-on modules are inserted into the computer..always a steady a1 led
a flashing a1 led could indicated the program is perhaps indicating a move..perhaps from square a1 to some other square
if you do not have the pieces try inserting a thin object in the peg hole on A1
it might light up another square which would be the TO square
i assume you tried pressing the RE key?
this should reset the computer
if you press the RE key and nothing happens ..sadly i think your MSC  might be

Defective Regards

can anyone tell me what the norm is when you power up msc without chess pieces in place. mine flashes #1 led every few seconds. i,ve tried changing level but nothing changes only #1 led flashes on and off . i just want to make sure it,s not faulty unit before i try and find chess pieces for msc. unfortunately chess pieces were missing when i bought msc . i,ve found online manual so i,d bet you have to have pieces in place can anyone confirm this. Thanks James
