HI Jed,

Thanks for the reply. I actually solved the problem and my setup works as expected. I know my Citrine was not communicating with Arena when I disconnected the serial cable and Arena did not even detect that the serial port was missing. I experimented further by clicking the menu option for configuring a DGT board which I didn't have and the message "device not present" from Arena was immediately displayed. So all along serial communication with Arena was not present even if all my connections were correct and good. I then chose the Auto-232 option and internet server options just to see what happens then I suddenly noticed that the Arena gui was tracking the piece movements on the board even if I was not actively playing a game.

I went ahead and chose the Novag board from the menu and sure enough, everything worked. Baud rate set at 57600 as you mentioned.

I just picked up one pair of serial to bluetooth converters mfg by I/O gear to experiment with wireless communications so I can remotely use the Citrine to play with Arena in my other desktops. I saw the video in Utube working in the same fashion with similar devices.

My hookup was fairly straightforward. I just followed the instructions on the Novag website & then adjusted the settings as I mentioned earlier.

http://www.novag.com/Web%202006/Manual%20download/CITRINE%20%20TO%20PC%20WITH%20ARENA.pdf

The only problem that I had was with the usb-serial cable. I bought one of those cheap ones from China off of Ebay. They sent me a driver for it that did not work. I had to search the web for one that did.

I can say that I never experienced your issues. There are several good videos on youtube showing Citrine-Arena working correctly. This is how mine works.

HI,

Thanks for the post. In my case, the PC via Arena "sees" the Citrine and records the moves when you access the "Communication" field under the task bar when you choose "configure Novag Citrine" under the drop down menu when running Arena. It confirms the correct Com port and says "Com 1 or 2 or 3 ready (depending on the configured Comport in the PC) properly. The moves as seen via the Arena gui are recorded properly. What drives me crazy is that the moves moved  by Citrine via flashing LED's  do not match the moves within Arena as seen in the GUI so games are unplayable.

For instance I'm playing white against an engine and starting a new game. I move E2 to E4. The Gui in Arena does not track this so I proceed to physically move the same piece (e2 to e4) in the board.
The engine then moves d7 to d6 in Arena Gui while the Citrine's flashing LED's is moving the knight at G8 to G6. Not matching the GUI. I then have to reset to a new game immediately.

I go to referee mode and the same thing happens. The moves in the Arena chessboard do not match the moves in the Citrine board. This starts immediately from a new game.

If the Citrine was controlling Arena, then any piece I move in the board will immediately be followed by the same piece to the same position in the Arena screen. This is not happening. It seems that the bidirectional serial communication between Arena and PC is screwed up.

Does yours wotk the same way as I described above or does it work as expected?. Thanks in advance for a speedy reply.

I have succefully connected my netbook to novag citrine using rs232-usb cable while running Arena 2.0.1 and it works ok.

Baud rate should be 57600  Stop bits 1  Parity no

The Set Citrine Defaults setting is incorrectly shown as Baud rate 576000

Novag Citrine and Arena Software- Com problems

Just received the Novag Citrine for X'mas primarily to interface the Novag to a PC and play different engines through Arena. I am a  experienced custom  PC builder and know some about serial protocols and also hardware.

What has stumped me for the past two days is that the Citrine is not communicationg properly with Arene Version 2.01 software ( latest version) inspite of the fact that the Novag driver has been existent  foe a few years starting with versvers 1.99 beta with Arena.

I have used  a laptop- Windows XP with service pack 3 with a USB to serial adapter and have verified via the control panel that the serial port configurable from Com 1 to 4 works properly. I have also used a fast desktop with a direct Com port (Com 1) without success.

In particular, Arena recognizes the board and records the moves under the "get info" and "configure Novag" menu but does not properly move the correct pieces in the GUI in Arena as compared to the pieces in the board starting with the 1st or 2nd move starting a new game.

I have changed baud rates from 4800 to 56700, stop bits set at 1 and no parity. All different combinations w/o success.

I have to reset to a new game many times. Also went to referee mode on the Citrine where I make the moves for black and white and starting the 1st or 2nd move, the Novag ( i.e moves a pawn  d2 to d4 while the Arena gui screen moves the knight  from a new game position. They don't match at all.

I have searched on the internet for possible solutions but all the bulletin boards merely assume that the driver works.

Any hints for me what to do next short of having a defective cable. remember, this is a brand new unit and have verified that the board works properly ( Human vs. Citrine) during a normal game. It's only the interface between Arena and Novag that does not work properly. Do I need to download a separate UCI driver?

For those who have their Citrine's working properly with any version of Arena including the latest version- I will appreciate any hints. I do have a scope but don't want to spend too much time disecting and analyzing signals to and from the Citrine and PC running Arena.

Thanks.
