What I also don't care too much about this unit is the annoying "sound effects". That can be amusing for some but can you really play serious chess with those noises?

That's something I hate on the "Mephisto Schachschule II": The SFX are terrible (swords clanking etc.), but when you switch them off, you even don't have a little "beep", when it makes its move! (or did i miss something?)

And its the same with "Alex"; I would favor a little "beep" instead of the noisy and battery-consuming move-anouncements!

Let us know when you write part II of this story Tom
Ismenio

Part two's been completed, Ismenio, but it mainly consists of the five games that were published on your board first - but now with diagrams.

Btw, I agree with you that a printer or other port would be preferable to the sound effects. But Excalibur already had this sound fx chip lying on the shelves (I've heard it used in other Excalibur handhelds as well). So re-using this chip was cheaper.

But making notes of the five games was hard work that made me yearn for a nice little infrared or other connection

Still I hope to be able to put other games on the Internet as well, for instance with the Kasparov Cosmos, an nice machine that I received recently.

Best regards,

tom

Actually you can! (Thank God)
But still, that's a feature that I could do without. I would trade it for something else, like a printer port

Can't you simply turn off the sound effects using the "Sound" button?

I haven't done it on mine, since I am one of those that is amused by the sounds - at least so far.

Unfortunately, I received mine last week. And paid a total sum of .... 160 dollars, as you can read here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~tluif/weblog/09JUN05.html

You can't be lucky all the time, can you?

Folks, I think this is the best price I've seen for this unit in a long time. They're brand new! 6 available for $55 each.
I don't know the seller but he seems to have a good feedback: 100% (39)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5205490644

As an example, ChessUSA sells it for $99.95:

That seems to have the same program as "Alexandra The Great"; they are both rated at 2000 and have 136 levels.

So maybe it's not so interesting for people who already have "Alex"  (like me!)

Christian, good news / bad news!
Good news= he relisted it!
Bad news= higher price! (US $65.00)

Still cheaper than the average price on many online stores but that's more than double the previous auction!

Ismenio

Strange. Maybe the seller thinks that rising the starting price attracts more people

Christian,

By the way, I've been quite busy so I couldn't see/answer your post sooner. I noticed the auction ended without a single bid. Now I wish I had taken my chances with a new seller because I think the price was really good. Oh well, maybe it will show up again!

Let me know if you want more information.

Ismenio

Ismenio,

No harm done. I could have bidden if I had really WANTED it...
1900 is quite strong. Do you know who did the programming?

I also think it will pop up again, maybe at a lower price

Christian,

The ELO is 1900, though I think Excalibur claims a higher number.  I like many of its features like the information it displays and also I like it for analysis. It has some sound effects that may be a novelty but I personally find them distracting.

This is a good deal, I think! US $30.00 for a nice handheld unit. I like this one because the screen is really easy to read, even better than other units that are more expensive. Though the program may not be as strong. However, the seller as 0 feedbacks.

I think the lowest price that I've seen for this one is $99.
