Thanks for the info,

I used Google to translate the german post. Sadly, I wasn't able to see the photos as I wasn't registered and when I did try they asked a few anti spam questions that I couldn't understand and when I tried to use google to translate the registration page, it wouldn't go past a certain point.

Anyway for those that want to know what the german guy did, he installed a 9 Volt battery and holder into the bottom of his Citrine to use as back up power in case he had to move the set in the middle of a game, in case dinner needed to be served, etc. If you unplug the Citrine the game will be lost as there is no flash memory and no battery backup power.

He then tells you what he used and how easy it is to cut holes into the bottom cover of the Citrine and has some photos which only registered members could see.

As far as the 12 AA batteries I would have them grouped as two parallel sets of 6 in series giving me 9 Volts but with twice the capacity of one set of 6. This is because I want to achieve a 200 hour battery life with the Citrine and the 12 AA's will give me close to the capacity of 6 C's.

Anyway this is encouraging as it looks like a 9V battery holder is about 20mm deep. With the AA holders being only 19mm it looks like AA's will fit easily.

Thanks,
Daniel

Has anyone out there made a battery pack mod for the Novag Citrine? This computer to me is just begging for one. From what I understand, the hardware is basically the same as the Obsidian which is what I have and it runs well on batteries. Why couldn't have Novag given the Citrine a battery option?

good question! next one!

I figure that I could get good life out of 12 AA's.

12 AA's are giving >18V; ok, a common voltage regulator should be able to manage it, but i would say, 6 AA's or C's are enough...

Somebody at schachcomputer.info made a battery-mod with a 9V battery mainly for buffering purpose, but he wrote, that playing for about 2 hours is also possible (9V's have not much capacity, as you surely know)

here is the link to his posting (if you cannot read German, you will have a small problem )

there are also some pictures he made, but i am not sure, if an unregistered member can see them?

if you want, i can send the pictures and help you contacting him...

best regards,
Robert

Okay just wanted to add a little something here. Just checked the dimensions for AA and C Battery Holders. Looks like we'd need 19mm (3/4") of space to add a AA battery holder and 25mm (1") of space for C batteries. This dimension would be from the bottom of the bottom cover to the bottom of the chess board circuit board.

From the photos it looks like AA's might just work...

Ciao fellow chess computer enthusiasts,

Has anyone out there made a battery pack mod for the Novag Citrine? This computer to me is just begging for one. From what I understand, the hardware is basically the same as the Obsidian which is what I have and it runs well on batteries. Why couldn't have Novag given the Citrine a battery option?

Anyway, I don't have a Citrine yet but and really tempted to get one in the next few months and would like to mod it out to run on batteries. I've seen some photos where someone cracked one open and took pictures of the internals and the little chess computer circuit board. What I'd like to know from you Citrine owners is there enough room inside the Citrine for AA batteries or even C's?

I figure that I could get good life out of 12 AA's. The Obsidian gets a great life of almost 250 hours with six C cells. C's have a capacity of around 5000 mAh while AA's have a capacity of 2000 mAh so I should be able to get about 200 hours out of a two AA six packs in parallel. That'd be great if they can fit.

If they don't fit then maybe i could go with a different rechargeable type like lithium ion where I could get something nice and thin.

Has anyone tried this and if anyone has opened up their Citrine, do you think that there is enough space to install a battery holder?

Ciao,
Daniel
