Oh!!!

Stupid me.  I was trying to mate from the white side.  The instructions didn't specify, so I spent 4 hours and could never come up with an answer.

I also spent ages proving that it took rather too many moves to take blacks rook wherever it was. Mate in six Ok. In five? So I started looking from the black side but the moves are so hard to see.

Ismenio is a great time waster.

Many thanks for the puzzle. Really dificult. It took ages.

The solution evaded the combined efforts of Kasparov and Karpov and later Botvinnik and the whole of the Russian Chess School. So I was amazed to be able to find the solution all by myself.

Sorry Christian! My bad! I meant to say Martin! I guess I was thinking about your Tasc pieces when I was typing

Also, I never really asked directly: does your board perform the same as Mike's when you turn it on without the pieces? Flashing each square on 1,2,7 and 8?

Ismenio

Ismenio,

no harm done.

Yes, my boards perform exactly like Mike´s when switching on the unit without setting pieces on the board. I think the Tasc is "searching" for the pieces which should be positioned in the beginning position.

If you then switch through the menu to "Position", you could "accept" the empty board...but than he would not accept because it is an illegal position...you should at least place the two kings.

If there is something wrong with the board the Tasc would also tell you "Board not ok".

Concerning my pieces: Since each set of pieces works only on its dedicated board I can only sell them together.

I've had this for a while now but never had a chance to play with it. Now that I started looking at it, I know I can't solve it.

So, does anybody have the solution? Please email me or send me a private message. If you post the solution here add a "spoiler warning" and many blank lines before the text so that you won't spoil it for others. It came from ChessBase and it is from 1999 but I didn't find the solution there.

Here it is:

A game begins with 1.e4 and ends in the fifth move with knight takes rook mate.

This is the starting position. All you have to do is enter some legal chess moves, so that the game ends on move five with the stipulated knight takes rook mate.

http://www.chessbase.com/puzzle/puzz05d.htm

I have a couple of people at work waiting for this!

Thanks,

Ismenio
