Ismenio,

the SB I recently bought had been send to Arno Kreuzberg (it was beyond my skill). He told me once at the phone that these are hard to repair, but he did it already four times. I will keep you informed.

Of course you could send the non-working unit to me, and I can test it with my three boards...but this should be the last measure.

One thing you could try is exchanging the program eproms...there are two in each unit. In this way you could find out whether the program eproms of the non working unit are corrupted. But of course there is the small risk of corrupting the working ones two if the fault is elsewhere. You should send Ruud an email on this, he is a resourceful guy.

Power for the board you need ONLY when you use it on a PC, correct.

If you wish I can call Arno Kreuzberg on the fatal error...I will give him a call tomorrow anyway.

Concerning your Smartboard: Connect it to the working unit, switch the unit on by keeping pressed the play button. You enter the debug mode then. Switch through the menus to the menu point position. You will see numbers on each square of the LCD Chessboard where the pieces are placed. If you place a piece (you can try different pieces) on H8, and nothing appears on the LCD, the square H8 is not working. That would be the same error I have in one of my SBs. If Arno makes it, we will probably know the fault.

I could play with my SB without using the square C1 startingfrom the postion setup menu...but it is hard to play chess without using one square

Hope this helps.

Mike,

The board does light up as you describe, except for the last square on h8! the last two LEDs on h8 don't light up. on g8 I can see all 4 LEds light up. So maybe I have a problem on that square?

I can get to the menu, sub-menus and play with the options without problems.

As for the non-working unit, I did open it but didn't see anything wrong. I'll check it again.

I don't know that I can find someone here to help with the test. I even thought about sending it to you or Christian, of course I'd pay for shipping both ways but I know that will be expensive so I'll try to find something around here first.

Also, when would you need to power the board? I see it has a place for a power adapter. Is that when you would use it with a PC?

Here's an interesting paragraph from the manual:

If you want to use pieces other than the ones that came with the R30, the circuits have to be built into each of the pieces feet. Please contact Tasc B.V., on how to do this

That gives me some hope that, some former Tasc employee out there should be able to at least have an idea about how complex it would be to create those circuits.

Thanks,

Ismenio

Hi Ismenio

When you connect your working computer unit with the SB30 what happens? Do you get the 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th ranks lighting up waiting for the pieces to be set up?

Does the computer unit on its own react to the menu button etc? It seems like it should because the initial announcement is correct for a R30 v2.2

What you really need is someone in the U.S. to lend you pieces which work with a SB30. If they work with yours it will only be a matter of time before you can acquire a set of your own.

If I was you I would have a look inside the non-working one to see if there is a loose power connection. They are easy to open up. Just take normal care to clear the switch when you separate the halves.

All the best
Mike

Yes, I now have an incomplete Tasc system (R30).

Well, I almost wish I didn't have these now! I'm stuck and I have no way to test them now.
I asked Christian to keep his extra board and pieces and will talk to him about this but it

concerns me that some pieces may not work with some boards and also I wouldn't want to buy

the extra items that I need if the module is not working. What should I do?

I also got not one but two modules! But one is not working.
The one that seems to be working gives me this info:

Tasc R30 Version v0.31 (3-May-1993)
512K Program RAM, 128 permanent RAM
256K system ROM
processor speed 30Hmz
--- CHESS PROGRAM INFORMATION ---
Version 2.20 (23-Apr-93)
Program by Johan de Koning

But the other one gives me this error:

Fatal error 8
Processor trap
Vector = 5  LR = A20043D0

Does anyone know if Arno Kreuzberg would be able to repair that? Or maybe Ruud Martin?

Here's what I have (plus the manual):
