Hi All,

I just wanted to post this message as a public reply to some emails I got from visitors. I had the feeling that some are feeling a little shy to join us and talk about chess + computers because they feel they donít have much to contribute or are knowledgeable enough to participate.

Let me assure you that anyone is more than welcome to participate here, even if you donít have a chess computer. Based on the messages I got, some are interested in the subject and thatís all that counts! Iím sure nobody is going to ignore you or make fun of you and your questions. Take it from me! When I started this about 15 months ago I knew next to nothing about chess computers other than I liked them! I started off trying to find which one was the first commercial chess computer and it drove me crazy that I could not find the right answer! Back then I didnít know about Kurtís site or CCC and checking only sites in English I couldnít find the info I wanted. Thatís why I decided to set up the site and last February I started this forum not really knowing where it would go or if we would even have enough interest to keep it going.

I personally admire anyone who has an interest in these machines no matter what you level of knowledge is and even if you are just a student and cannot afford buying some of these computers! I sympathize with you as I was once in this position and today itís still not easy for me to get them. My Tasc is a good example of that where I had to buy different parts and put them together as I couldnít really afford getting one based on the last few eBay auctions that I saw. Sometimes I can only watch some auctions knowing that I canít even think about bidding on them but I still have the desire to learn about them.

Sadly, today I have very little time to dedicate to this hobby and unfortunately I have left other forums I used to be on because I simply donít have time to check things around anymore so Iím glad we have our participants here. Believe me, I am learning something new every day and even if you are a newbie we welcome you and Iím sure the members here have the same feeling and will try to make you feel comfortable. There are very few people in this field and with each new interested person we have a better chance to keep this alive!

So whether you have a Mephisto Bavaria or a humble small Radio Shack or a vintage Apple running earlier versions of Sargon, you have my highest regards and I would like to hear from you!

I hope this message helps.

Warmest regards,

Ismenio

Ismenio,

That was very well said, and I certainly am a perfect example of how friendly everybody here can be to a novice.  I just happened to discover Ismenio's new forum a day or two after he started it.  It was in Beta testing at the time and I had no idea what it would become (nor did he, I suspect).  At the time I only had a single, modest Fidelity CC9 chess computer that I had purchased new in 1982.  I had just a few days earlier won a Fidelity Phantom chess computer on eBay, and was looking for some information on the Internet about them.  That was when I discovered this brand new forum.

I didn't know what I would ever be able to contribute to this activity, and sometimes still feel that way, but I went ahead and became a member of Ismenio's new forum.  It was one of the best choices I have made.  I get so much enjoyment out of the interaction here and have learned a great deal about this fun and exciting hobby.  The people here have, without exception, been wonderful to me and everybody else.

I have come to anticipate with pleasure the interaction here, and my recent vacation away from any computers certainly showed me how much I enjoy having this be a part of my day.

The only real downside to all of this is that now, after only a few months, I have more than 30 of these wonderful little chess computers, and have no desire to stop.

I love this place!

Well said Ismenio.

You can find chess computers for just a few dollars, euros or pounds on Ebay and join in. This includes some historic chess computers important in the development of the hobby like the Fidelity Chess Challenger 7 and 8, Boris, the early Novags, Mephistos etc and some strong 1990s machines.
