Are they equal in strength ?How does your Cosmos
compare in strength to your Centurion ? 1700 ?

Cosmos and Centurion have a nearly identical program (the playing-engine should be the same, the only differences should be the missing options of the Centurion)

They are rated at about 1980 (old) SSDF-ELO.

Which of the two do you like playing against ?

I like the "look-and-feel" of the Centurion very much; the advantage of the Cosmos is its portability! That's the only reason, why i mostly prefer the Cosmos.

I have
Novags Obsidan and the Cougar(Cosmos]and Cougar
whips Obsidian in short games.

Cougar and Cosmos/Centurion are not identical! The Cougar is 60% faster (16 to 10 MHz)

Quite by accident, the Cosmos (as shown above) recently became part of the Overtom Collection. So I organized a match between the newcomer and Novag Star Ruby - which also entered the collection not very long ago.

After seven games, Cosmos had won three and four were drawn. I don't think it's too much of a speculation to conclude Cosmos is the better player.

Since there was some discussion here about the fact that Cosmos has the option of switching between selective search and brute force, I set Cosmos to brute force. The result was dramatic. Where in the previous games Cosmos had clearly shown much initiative, it now played quite passively. Cosmos lost both games played in this mode.

Which may probably go to show the superiority of brains over brawn.

Btw, I'll try to get some of the games in a pgn file. In that case it's likely that I'll write a few words about them at overtom.nl/weblog/chess&comp.html

Best regards,

tom

I was checking out the features of saitek expert

I didn't find a "Saitek Expert" on their website. Is this comparable to the Challenger/Centurion (the tabletop-devices) or do you mean the "Expert Travel Chess" (portable)

and came across this "Playing Options user-selectable
search Algorithms for customization". Is this another
way of saying selective or brute force searching ?
Or is this a new feature? TC2100 or cosmos [older models.]lack this..

When i compared my Centurion with my Cosmos then i found that the Centurion was lacking many features of the Cosmos! (all the options that can be activated with A2-H2 on the Cosmos)

This are: Selective/Brute force (that should be what you meant); easy mode (permanent brain) on/off; random on/off and all library options!

Maybe they removed them because of a lack of memory; the Centurion has some positions for teaching in ROM, which the Cosmos doesn't have...

While I can't answer your question Lawrence that is what it sounds like to me. And I actually have another question on this subject. Does anyone know of a test where you can tell whether or not a computer is using brute force or selective search?
