No the batteries go in the board and it cannot be used separately. 6 C batteries. The program unit is small and very light.
Good features. Plenty of options incl evaluations and rotating display.

If you need a manual let me know.

Thanks Mike.  Is the program unit usable as a handheld away from the board?  The picture wasn't a very close shot, but I did notice that each square has a LED on it.  I like that feature.

I just bought one on eBay for $15.00 with the Buy It Now.  It looked decent, from the one picture, but I don't have a clue about it.
