Then about the playstyle (active) the 2.2 plays much more atracting then the 2.5 version more do or die games .This info i got from Cock de Gorter bookmaker of the Tascs

I was told by an employee of a chess computer dealer that many 2.5-Tasc's were "downgraded" to 2.2, when the 2.5-owners found out that the playing-style of the 2.2 was more attractive!

Hello mick,ismenio,

There is defently a difference between 2.2 and 2.5 in the 2.5 is a later developed King program and much much chessknowlegde in it. A Dutch Grandmaster ore International Master ( i forgot his name)has also worked for this 2.5 version for more chessknowlegede ,also the openingsbook is different! Then about the playstyle (active) the 2.2 plays much more atracting then the 2.5 version more do or die games .This info i got from Cock de Gorter bookmaker of the Tascs

Ismenio

There is not a big difference between v2.2 and v2.5. Eric Hallsworth currently has them at Elo 2310 and 2354. The problem is getting hold of the v2.5 Eproms.

Of course it is worthwhile in terms of having in your collection the strongest machine that was sold in significant numbers. If you can get the Eproms at little cost I would go for it.

My impression is that there are more v2.2s around than v2.5s, at least that is true of my records of Tascs that have come up on Ebay in the last two years. The Tasc v2.5 came out at just the time that PC programs had overtaken dedicated machines and were killing the dedicated market.

Hello Ismenio,

Of course u can update ure 2.2 to a 2.5 with a eprom .There are many guys who make them .But in mine opinion the 2.2 version plays much and much more atracting chess then the 2.5 . It's ure call...

Guys, I have a question. My King program for my Tasc is v2.2. It seems to be that most of the owners have v2.5. Is that possible to ugprade it today? Should I go for there? Any comments from a collecting/originality stand point?

Thanks,

Ismenio v1.0 (Beta)

Hans

Robert mentioned that he had a heat problem with a Tasc R30 earlier in the summer when the weather was very hot.

Of course I have not come across this problem as I live in England.

Please can you let us know what Niggemann do to overcome the R40 overheating, when you get the R40 back again?

Has anyone tried to upgrade the whole program in a Tasc?

Hello Ismenio,

Of course i will send u pictures of the unit, but right now i can't because the R40 is by Niggemann for repair with a heatproblem. And according to Cock de Gorter he said to me t can there are only 7 but it can be also +- 25! He didn't know for sure. But the R40 of Cock has 1 thing special all the Tascs have his openingsbook also this R40 but in This R40 it have a updated book from last year New and more scharp openings .
I have only 1 game played with it against the Risc 2  1MB  40 moves in 2 Hour and that ended in a draw.

Hello Mike,

Yes i know it sound crazy but it's treu only the Tournament machine need to be repaired ,and also the Tasc R30 (but wich thisone i can play, the moves are in the LCD and the bord accept the moves)and the R40 is now by Niggemann because of a heat problem ,the cpu gets to warm and then a error disapear in the lcd .There is a cooler on the cpu in the R40 and also a hole in the back of it to let the warm air out .We shall see of they can repair it ore solve the heatproblem for me and for Cock de Gorter the owner of course

Greetings ,

Hans

Hi Hans! Congratulations on owning a R40! The count I have is that there are only 7 of those out there, right!
Do you have pictures of the unit? I have never seen that in details before.

Thanks,

Ian,

Thanks for that story! Do you remember what version that was? (R30 v2.2?)  1200! That was a lot of money!
I'm assuming you bought it from a local store in UK?

I don't know if you have seen them on eBay but recently we have had even some scammers setting up bogus auctions for them >:(

Ismenio

Yes it would have been the 2.2 version as it was the same price of 1195 that Mike has mentioned, and the store was in the UK but i won't say which one !.

Thanks for the warning about the E-bay scams but i would always be very careful about who i buy from.

Ian.

Mike,

I think this is a regular price. I paid 1550 Euros for my R30V2.5 in great condition. But it came in a custom made case.

You are right the Tasc R30 was a lot of money. I paid the equivalent of 1195. Actually 795 and my beautiful Novag Super Expert B6 in part exchange. Eric Hallsworth had to put the part exchange down as a Munchen Vancouver 68020 on the receipt as his boss Mike Healey would not give a 400 allowance on a B6.    I was agonising over whether I could spend that much on a chess computer for weeks. In todays money it must be the equivalent of about $5000. A little later they went up to 1495. The upgrade to a v2.5 cost 129.

Sorry i have no technical knowledge when it comes to computers but i do have the odd story to tell which you may find interesting.

Around the mid 1990's i decided i really wanted to buy a new TASC so paid around 1200 for it and got myself into huge debt on my credit card.
When it arrived i was desperate to play it, so i set everything up on the high level and used the default time which i think was 5 or 10 seconds average per move. Anyway as the game progressed i found myself in a good position which was getting even better and eventually became a won Rook and pawn endgame for me, but my immediate joy soon turned to disappointment as i realised that i was not meant to be able to beat this 'monster' and on my first ever game against it. Ok so i played some more casual games after that one and it killed me, but the point was that i had won already and that had shattered my illusions of its huge power so it had to go back !!.
It was hard work persuading the shop to take it back but my story was that i was unhappy with the size of the board and pieces {which was true} as the Tasc was promoted as being of tournament size but in my opinion was actually much smaller, is the King height about 3" ?,  eventually the shop agreed and luckily i got all my money back.

So i was the proud owner of a TASC for 1 day.

Ian,

when I have been downed by my Tasc I always let him play against Deep Shredder (3GHz dual clock). This really is a punishment, and after I always feel better!
Welcome!

I now realise that I had a lucky escape. From January 1994 when I bought my Tasc R30 to the day I sold it (March 2005) I never beat it once. The occasional draw here and there, but that is all. To think I might have fluked a win and chucked it in the loft disgusted.
