Hi Ismenio,

why not? But the concept as I have it understood is much too complicated. I can imagine a much simpler and cheaper 'robot' design.

Regards, Reinhard.

Hi Reinhard,

Thanks for the update. I will download it and play with it. My schedule is still hectic but I want to follow this project.
Question for you. Would you be interested in having your program drive the robot we've been discussing?

Best regards,

Ismenio

The system consists of two different and separated parts. These are a GUI (actual version 1.1.3) and an engine DLL (actual version 1.23) working together. I am mostly talking about the engine's version number.

Reinhard.

P.S.: you will find the engine's version number displayed in the GUI's caption and the GUI's version number via Help => About ...

Hi Reinhard,

Is that version under a different link? I just tried to download the version from and when I try to install it it says v1.1.2?

I've been using this link: http://www.chessbox.de/Compu/schachsmirf_e.html

Thanks,

Hi Reinhard,

I was reading some more details from your page and I have to say I'm impressed with what you've done! I can't help but think it must be somewhat complex to have a program that can handle all these variations. It's one thing to work on a standard 8x8 array and assign values to the squares, etc. It's something completely different to be able to handle that + FRC + all the other variables you have.

Very nice work!

Hi Ismenio,

thank you for welcoming me. I simply noticed that a new forum was accessing my homesite, so I decided to give a life sign here.

The Smirf project began last year by writing a program participating in a GothicChess event in USA, as you probably will have noticed. Because there has been no usable GUI for my FullChess idea to support a lot of variants compatible to traditional Chess, the Capablanca 10x8 extended piece set and the Fischer Random shuffling, there it has been unavoidable to write an own GUI using an own TCMI protocol, which is free.

In November 2004 there has been an early playing Beta of Smirf been released to participate that world championship. It has been very weak compared to the current version, but it reached place four of eight. Since then the program has been improved, the GUI has got more functions and a lot of bugs have been extinguished (even today I have fixed two minor GUI bugs).

SMIRF is intended to become ShareWare with free updates to key owners. I think to release it with October.

SMIRF takes a lot of time, e.g. because it is not only a simple 8x8 engine, and because it is not derived from existing foreign software or sources. Thus Smirf is behaving somehow different. That are some reasons, why I do not intend to release it as FreeWare.

During the time there of course will be improvements. So there a UCI engine sister will probably come soon. That will open a lot of possibilities e.g. using Arena as a GUI for 8x8 variants. But it will make no sense to extend SMIRF GUI's interface abilities, where no 10x8 counterparts exist. Nevertheless a special remote access will come to enable different 10x8 programs to play games semi automatically.

I value CRC (Capablanca Random Chess) to become a new testing field for advanced chess computer programs.

Regards, Reinhard.

Hi Sumerian and welcome!
I would like to play more with SMIRF but time is a rare commodity for me But I like the idea and it seems pretty stable to be a beta product. Any idea as to when it will go gold?

Also, for traditional chess, would it be able to have it work with a DGT board? Just curious.

Interesting shots you have there:

There is a new Beta Version 1.15 (old picture) (GUI english, german, swedish)

Smirf supports a lot of 8x8 and 10x8 chess variants including Chess960/FRC and of course traditional Chess.

Paul,

I did install it on my laptop and played with it a little bit and didn't have any problems so far.  On the notes they mention something about a laptop with a fast video card where there was a need to slow it down to have it run properly.

I would suggest you create a restore point in Windows right before installing it just in case. As I said, I haven't had much time to play with it but I'll let you know if I run into problems.

BTW, I find the refresh of the board, right after you play a move, a little distracting.

For those interested: http://www.chessbox.de/Compu/schachsmirf_e.html

Has anyone downloaded and used the beta version of SMIRF?  I don't like to mess around with beta versions as it can mess up other stuff on the computer, but if others have had good luck with it, I'll try it. Thanks.
