Yogi Berra is a good name. I take no credit for the phrase, and if its Yogis, I hope he doesn't mind us using it. It surfaces over here every now and then, usually repeated by a sportsman or commentator. They are particularly keen on this sort of saying in Football (Soccer) where they have their own special brand of the English language. In fact they manage to sell an annual every Christmas of nonsense uttered by sportsmen. But Yogi is class.

Hey Mike Mike, are you an American baseball fan?

Yogi Berra, one of the former New York Yankee greats, was almost as famous for making very strange and non-sensical comments.  Nobody knew for certain, but it was generally believed that he did it unknowingly.

"Deja Vu, all over again" was one of his best.

Another one that I like is:  "Nobody ever goes to that restaurant, because it is always too crowded".

If you didn't know about Yogi Berra and his comment, then I am even more impressed about your thinking processes.  You know, great minds think alike!

I would say Dick Dick, but that might be pushing the bounds of propriety.

Hmmm... I may look at that one
Sods law?

Don't know why but that reminded me of a Phantom I once saw, after the auction ended, where a complete 6100 model was sold for $100 via the buy-it-now feature

Would not the machine in the picture be lettered "Chesster Phantom" if it was a 6124 or 6126?

Oops, yes, of course that is correct!

Would you believe that my eyes are that bad?

Mike,

I have emailed with this owner back and forth a few times, because of the green lettering on the picture.  He is using the same picture for all of them.

The person running the auction is not the owner of these machines, but simply a brokerage house.  The owner said he is not a collector or even a dealer, but acquired several of these Phantoms awhile back.  He didn't say how or how many.  He did say that some of them didn't work.

He was a bit evasive when I asked him about the green lettering on the 6100.  He said they were using the same picture on all of them, but never would admit that the one in the picture was actually a 6126.  Since the picture doesn't show the front where the eyeballs are, and I can't read the buttons, I can't be certain.  It is possible that they simply mixed up the machines for the picture.

He said that he didn't have any 6124's (I asked), but did have at least one 6126.  I am trying to get a set of chess pieces from him off of one of the machines that don't work, but so far he has been reluctant to do that.

I told him that I was in the middle of creating this Phantom frenzy, with my big bid on the 6126, but that didn't seem to phase him.  I thought it might make him more receptive to selling me a set of pieces cheap.

Dick

Very interesting information. Thanks.

Do not worry about the green lettering. I have a green and white Phantom 6100. It is my non-working one. Although most are brown/black I think they must have gone over to green/white later, perhaps when the Chessters were produced. Would not the machine in the picture be lettered "Chesster Phantom" if it was a 6124 or 6126?

If they are using the same pictures for each of these machines it will be interesting when they claim one is an Eyeball

Now Deeply Suspicious

Another mint Phantom on Ebay. Same seller as yesterdays.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5170642723&fromMakeTrack=true

Since the $1027 one in early January there has been a steady flow of Phantoms coming "out of closet". Prices have subsided  back to the $550 level they were at a year ago.

Mikes prediction    If the price goes under $500 supply will slow back to a trickle.
