Robert

A strange circumstance. As the listing appears to have been pulled by Ebay after the auction closed I assume this was not an authentic bid and nobody was scammed.
Perhaps Ebay had their eye on it after all.

I hope the guy (or gal?!) who won this auction has not sent the money and is either negotiating with the seller or has been warned about this shameful, disgusting tactic!

Btw, the auction has been removed by Ebay and the seller is no longer registered!

Has anybody contacted the buyer, to find out, what happened after the auction?

If nobody did it until now, then i will do it.

Well, at least one potential Tasc scam victim didn’t fall into that trap! Someone did check the info page on this type of scam ( http://www.ismenio.com/scam_auction.html ) and did not bid on that! I think it was worth putting that page up just for that 1 person!

I hope the guy (or gal?!) who won this auction has not sent the money and is either negotiating with the seller or has been warned about this shameful, disgusting tactic!

I agree with you Ismenio. We should keep flagging up scams as we find them and hope that as many people as possible are aware of them. Your "beware of scammers" page includes all the tell tale signs.

http://www.ismenio.com/scam_auction.html

I think there is a possibility of the latest Tasc auction resulting in scam Second Chance Offers, as well.

Hi GM

The bids are well under what you would see for a legitimate auction.

Several Tascs were sold this year on German Ebay for prices around £800-900 (1100 - 1300 Euros). Three have been sold on Ebay in the UK for  £1235 (the Tasc details which have since been the subject of the scams), £1360 (in September) and £1671 two years ago.

Is it not a sad reflection on Ebays attitude to this sort of thing that the scammers can come back over and over again, even offering Paypal facilities (if real)? In the end Clive Munro gave up informing Ebay, because after the first few times when they did take the auction down, they just let the auctions stay up. Or are they leaving them up in order to help nail the culprits? Some hope !

Mike

Hi,

Quote from: GM on November  4, 2005, 12:44AM

about the final "value" of the item ?

It would have been a "bargain of the year" candidate. The common price for an R30 with SB30 is 1300 Euros, and real auctions can reach 1600-1700 Euros.

Apart from the reality of the auction,
please, what is your opinion
about the final "value" of the item ?
Thanks.

Aha! Excellent point Paul! I was in my usual hurry trying to play catch up and neglected to remember your post when you mentioned your question. I had seen that.

You're right! To me that is a big red flag. What seller would not prefer to receive cash for his goods? No hassle, no worries about packing and shipping, etc.

What is it that they say? If it talks like a duck, walks like a duck...

If this truly was legit, why did he/she not answer my question about personally picking up the unit in Texas if I won the bid?

I didn't expect that!

The winner is from Germany and the only thing I could find about him is that he likes "Queen"
Now, any chance at all that this could be legit? That the guy actually has a Tasc but just found it easier to just copy the text & pictures form another auction?

It is just that it is hard to think that you would have that many people bidding on it! I guess I don't really know what to make of this!

The Tasc scam may well have claimed its first victim. The auction ended after 17 bids with a high bid of $510.

The "winners" ID is a new one on me. Hopefully somebody knows this person and can warn them.

I wish I had the opportunity to meet your canonical obsolete/no-longer-made dedicated chess computer seller.  The chess computer collecting world is quite specialized and while it may constitute a slight exaggeration, hobbyists and their ilk work on a different wavelength of likes and dislikes than most other people--all the more reason for "meeting-the-person" pickup! =)

I asked the seller: if I won the bid, would I be able to directly pick up the R30 as his/her home as I will be in the Dallas area.  This is very close to Rowlett Tx where the item is located.  I have not received a response as of yet.

Well after many different attempts the scammer has hooked a fish, albeit at a lowly $199.

But the French bidder has 0 feedback and joined Ebay yesterday. Is this bidder a novice and genuine, an accomplice or is this somebody taking on the scammer?

Hi All

I have just emerged from a coal mine in South Wales. Sue and I were in the area and thought we would take a look.

There were no chess computers down the mine.

Is this a first?
Two versions of the Tasc scam going on at once.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8714979210&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8713241785&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Could this be one scammer trying to undercut another scammer?

All the best

On the topic of eBay scammers, this is an interesting reading from a recent article on BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4386952.stm

Summary (from the page):

How eBay fraudsters stole £300k

Three Romanian fraudsters have been jailed for conning eBay customers out of £300,000. How did they do it? And how can eBay's bidders avoid it happening to them?

Nicolae Cretanu, 30, his 23-year-old wife, Adriana, and George Titar were carrying on the world's oldest fraud tradition: Taking payments for goods they never intended to deliver.

Be careful out there!

I may have to save this one also for when I update this page: http://www.ismenio.com/scam_auction.html
I wish someone had saved each one of these when they showed up.

I still have the question of why they don't do it with other computers! The Tasc must have caused some impression on them. I think it should still be interesting to email the seller with the "good" questions to ask: would he take cash on pick up? how about an escrow service? etc.

Hello

Can you explain to me what's wrong with this offer ?

Hello Carter

This Tasc R30 was sold by Clive Munro in October 2004 bought by "heiland58". Ever since the pictures and description have been used by scammers to try to trap someone into buying the Tasc. The problem is the scammer does not have the Tasc to sell.

This must have happened seven or eight times. Clive got several of the auctions stopped.

The pictures are the obvious giveaway. The seller always has a different ID, moves around the USA and usually has 0 feedback.

All the best
