I haven't been checking eBay for a while now

I have found a very good link for you :
http://www.ismenio.com/ebay2.html

Could you please tell us the queries used to make it ?

Thanks,
GM

Of course GM! No secrets here
I've put the big URL with the search criteria I use, well, used to check when I had time to see what was going on on eBay:

http://tinyurl.com/8wz96

On the search box, I use this string:

("chess computer","electronic chess","schachcomputer","novag chess","fidelity chess","handheld chess","mephisto chess","excalibur chess")

You can add other paramters to it to get more hits

Hi Mike/Ian,

I think there's a plus side of knowing some eBay ids: you know whom you're buying from
I feel a lot more comfortable bidding when I know who's on the other end

My problem is that I usually forget who's who as I don't keep track of that and also I haven't been checking eBay for a while now

Regards,

Ismenio

You were right to defend your dustcover. There are a lot more MBs and Phantoms out there than there are dust covers.

I have myself spent an hour or two glueing one so that it was usable.

This one though was beyond all help. I was so incensed I gave the perpetrator an Ebay negative.

Hello Ian

I hadn't a clue it was you. You have blown your cover now.

Not that it's easy to stay anonymous around here for very long.

Your opinion ?

GM

The pluses :-

MB Phantoms do not come up on Ebay that often (perhaps 3 or 4 times a year)(These were sold in the UK, whereas more MB Miltons and MB Grandmasters were sold in Germany and USA respectively)
It looks to have a full set of original pieces + manual
Good condition
You might not buy one on Ebay for much less - possibly 200 minimum.

The negatives:-

No box for the MB
Plexiglass cover looks a write-off
If you live outside the UK add around 40-50 for postage.

Question

Does the piece set include the crowns (of little practical value but makes the chess computer more complete and desirable as a collectors item)

Mike

Yes this has all original pieces and manual and would go as far to say is in very good condition. Ok the dustcover has damage to one corner but it displays quite well and does it's job and is worth having and definitely not a 'write off'. There are no queen caps.

I put this on as a last minute decision as it was a 5p listing day on E-bay and with Xmas coming up etc, but actually i won't be too sad if it fails to sell

Yes! Also, I find it interesting that he mentions custom pieces. I wonder if they are just plain wooden ones or if he has found some that actually work with the Phantom. That would be a great finding!

The pictures of this one :  http://cgi.ebay.com/Fidelity-Phantom-Computer-Chess-Game-Complete-6100_W0QQitemZ8719672725QQcategoryZ1182QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem  are very funny.

Look at the number of pawns (wooden ?!??) and their positions on the chessboard...

By the way, i've found a milton (first generation) for 300 on ebay.be with the dust cover but without box  (very similar to the price given by Mike (200 )

I don't feel competent to speak about the Phantoms, but consider that there are three Phantoms on Ebay as we speak:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Phantom-MB-Computer-chess-that-moves-it-own-pieces_W0QQitemZ8718349978QQcategoryZ2554QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fidelity-Phantom-Computer-Chess-Game-Complete-6100_W0QQitemZ8719672725QQcategoryZ1182QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The planets would seem to have aligned (laughs) for this to happen...
