Lol, Mike, - I'm sure it will look like the former!

It looks in excellent condition and complete with a full set of pieces!

I am thinking of setting up a separate message board to discuss the value of CC1/CC3 pieces, send me a note if you want to join!

Fighting off the hordes regards...

You never know with Ebay Chris.

Hopefully it looks like this:-

and not like this :-

Ebay sellers often mix them up.

I wonder what a set of CC1/CC3 pieces is worth?

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I can not help with your query, but great picture I can see why you have it on permanent display!

Best wishes

Chris

PS - Also, congratulations on winning the complete CC3 at what seems a bargain price! - it is a CC3 and not a CC7?

Ian

I have not got a Munchen board (yet) so cannot be sure how they compare.

A "Munchen" piece set I bought new from the USA is virtually identical with the ESB pieces, 8.8 cm King height. I believe the Munchen board is roughly the same length and width, but is 6 cm high, compared with the ESB 9 cm.  The ESB is probably a finer piece of furniture, it has a lustre which I have not come across on other Mephisto boards.

Of course the ESB can only work with the early modules. Indeed some with just the II. So they will never play strong chess. I had an ESB back in 1983/4 when I got into a bit of a battle with Competence and Hegener & Glaser about non compatibility of that particular machine with the III. It would have had to go back to Germany for modification. Probably Competence's fault but it put me off Mephistos for 20 years.

Mike,

I like the look of the ESB and have often wondered how the quality of the pieces and board compares to say the Mephisto Munchen, or are they basically the same ?.

Hi All

I have just played a couple of games against my old Mephisto ESB. It is the only one of my chess computers that has a permanent place in the lounge, mainly because it looks good and is too big and awkward to put anywhere else. It looks similar to this :-

The main difference is that it has a black ribbon cable which attaches to the Brikett. It works fine with a Mephisto II or III module. The module in it says ESB II on the back. Power comes through the board. The module remains part of the Brikett which is not attached to the board except by the ribbon cable.

On the back is the serial number sticker (No. 011194) and it says Type DH5000.

Does anyone know, please, whether this is an ESB 6000a or 6000b, IIa or IIb ?

Mike

PS I won, but only by 1.5 - 0.5
