Hi,

I have a R30+SB30 with the PC interface with one (or two ?) floppies. I don't know if they are the same drivers for the R20, I don't even know what is on the floppies because I have never tried (cf. Martin's post).

If I find a computer with a floppy drive, I can try to send you what I'll find on the floppy.

And about the problem of compatibility with recent Windows releases, there is a alternative to old computers : Virtual PC (or VMWare).

It allows you to run a PC inside another PC; as the processor is the same, there is no emulation (or almost none) so the speed loss is OK and a virtual Windows 98 running inside a recent PC will probably run faster than on an old hardware (in addition, the virtual disk is an unique file which is very easy to backup or even transfer from a PC to another).

I have been able with Virtual PC to run an old version of Chessgenius connected to a Mephisto PC Board : it did not work under XP but run fine on Virtual PC and Virtual PC can grab the parallel port.

Best,

Alain

Hi nih,

I do have the software too but never used it. The SB20 (or SB30) is perfect when connected with the R30, however. Connecting it with a PC is considered by some true collectors to be close to a sacrilege...

A Happy New Year To All Regards,
Martin

...
btw, what do the people here with a tasc smartboard use
it with?, since it won't work with any new chess
software...they mainly used with the R30 module? or you
just boot into 98 to use it?

thx

Glad to see you got it nih!
I don't have all that I need to connect my Tasc board to a PC myself so I can't answer your question. If I had it, I would simply buy an old used PC running an old OS just to use the board.

Thanks for the reply, i managed to find some test programs here:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://perso.wanadoo.fr/lefouduroi/smartboard.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsmbdrvk.zip%26hl%3Den%26hs%3Dhrh%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official

pics using SMARTMON.EXE:

wouldn't work in xp (something to do with SMARTBRD.VXD)
then wouldn't work in win98se with an siig parallel port
card, eventually had to use an old p133, and it worked!
so at least i now know it works:)

btw, what do the people here with a tasc smartboard use
it with?, since it won't work with any new chess
software...they mainly used with the R30 module? or you
just boot into 98 to use it?

thx

Hi nih,

I may have one of these but I'm not sure. I'll have to look for it. I'll let you know.

Hello, as i'm sure you are all aware Tasc has gone out of business, and i've searched the net for the installation files (the ones that ask what chess program you are using etc), with zero luck, but while searching i found this forum, has any of you got the install files for the smartboard (its an SB20) you could send me or direct me to a location i can download them from?, mail is nih@nih.nildram.co.uk

thx
