Paul

This is, of course, the principle behind Resurrection although that uses an Intel Strongarm chip and PC programs have to be converted to run on it. Ruffian, Deep Sjeng, Toga and two versions of Fruit have been converted so far.

Another machine along the lines you suggest was produced in very small numbers in 1993 :-

It is part Mephisto Munchen, part PC running Windows and is known as the Mephisto Wundermaschine. Now it's amongst the world's rarest chess computers alas.

I second that Paul!

I also really miss that we don't have a "dumb" electronic chess board that could, at the very least, record moves to transfer to a computer. The DGT Board is really too expensive and I wonder if there's a market for an entry level DGT-like board or one like you described.

Too bad some company does not make a nice wood (stand alone)  autosensory board with enough memory like a pc without a chess program.  Then the user could download any engine they wanted to purchase and that would be the resident program.  Maybe, several engines could be stored.
