Hello Ismenio,

the speed of the Phantom is a about 1,5 times faster than of the Robot.

That's great. I am very pleased that the Robot has found an excellent home. Hopefully you will have two working Robots soon.

So now you won't need to bid on any more chess computer auctions on eBay.

That is excellent news Christian! Congratulations once more and take good care of this great computer. Good to see it is in good hands.

One question, if I may. How does the speed compare to that of a Phantom model? i.e., how do you compare the time it takes for the arm to make the same move a Phantom does?

Best regards,

Ismenio

Hello chess computer friends,

today my Robot arrived. He functions perfect and I understand, why all the owners of Robots love their computers. It is really one of the greatest chess computer ever built. The design is fantastic and looks very modern. The robotic function for this 23 year old computer is astonishing. I´m very happy! This computer is certainly the most important piece in my collection.
:-)

He said that they would take the computers out of the box and just leave them playing in demo mode overnight only to come in the morning and find out that about half of them were not working and had to be returned.

Thank you Imenio, this statement finally cured me from my wish to get a Robot!

I'm already convinced I'll never get one but that is probably a good thing since it would probably suffer in my hads as I would play with it and not just have it as a display piece

You described exactly my own thoughts!

Someone managed to get eBay to stop the scam auction well before the end. Well done that person.

Hopefully that will discourage others.

Congratulations Christian!!

Especially getting a working robot. I remember seeing a post way back, on CCC, from someone who either worked at or owned a chess shop and that person commented on the problems they had with the robot.

He said that they would take the computers out of the box and just leave them playing in demo mode overnight only to come in the morning and find out that about half of them were not working and had to be returned.

Too bad there are only a handful of people who are interested in them. It's sad to see that after more then two decades there are nothing in the market today like this.

I'm already convinced I'll never get one but that is probably a good thing since it would probably suffer in my hads as I would play with it and not just have it as a display piece

Christian

Just in case you haven't seen it, there is an Italian scam auction currently using the pictures of your Robot.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8255458127&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

It is very unconvincing - 0 feedback, a few general sentences in German not Italian etc - so I expect everyone will steer well clear of it.

Hi Mike,

indeed the vulnerability is a problem, because the construction of these computers is not very robust. Arno has had some Robots to repair and his experience grows, so very soon he will be comfortable in Robot repair business. Nevertheless Robots are not constructed for a permanent operation and must be handled with care.

Hi Christian

Congratulations on the Robot.

Does Arno have any others under repair at the moment?

Their vulnerabilty to damage and the risks of transporting them have always put me off, up to now. But I expect that I will try to get one sooner or later.

All the best

Hi Mike,

you are well informed. Indeed I´m from Karlsruhe Germany and I´ve bought the Ismenio Phantom. I´ve bought as well two Robots. The first was for 1232 € and the second today for round about 2520 €. The first one has my friend Arno Kreuzberg, who is perfect in chess computer repair business. He has some difficulties with this one, but there is some hope. If Arno is able to repair this Robot, I will give up one.

Best

Tom

I think the answer to your question is Karlsruhe.

Do you remember the Fidelity Phantom Ismenio auctioned for the Katrina hurricane appeal? It made $1000, and the generous winner of the auction was Christian Müller. Well Christian was high bidder on todays Robot and also one auctioned in November:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8727874893&

That one was known to be faulty but todays is, according to the seller, in working order.

So that is five sold on Ebay in just over a year:-

24/12/2004  - 3188 Euros  Slow and graunching arm?
04/06/2005  - 1910 Euros  Faulty
28/11/2005  - 1232 Euros  Faulty
16/01/2006  - $1550      No power supply to test it
29/01/2006  - $3050      Probably working.

Perhaps the first prices encouraged other Robots out of the closets. Hopefully more will come along and the faulty ones can be mended. They are very vulnerable to damage though.

Botwatch regards

Some auctions at eBay are so exceptional that they should be mentioned here. Today three thousand dollars were offered for a Novag Robot. The bidding went like this:

xdrive5 ( 78)  US $3,000.00 Jan-29-06 10:59:22 PST
.....
....

I should apologize. Later I found out that not xdrive was the winner with $3000, but mc002 who made the highest bid with:

mc002 ( 309)  US $3,050.00 Jan-29-06 10:59:54 PST

But we are still left with the question: where to go to if one wants to admire this costly rarity?

With apologetic regards,

tom

Hi Tom,

I was watching this auction with probably many others as well.

But did we know if it was actually working ?, or was it just something pretty to look at.

Is this a record ?.

And for those who can't afford three thousand dollars (without shipping), here is a free view of the hardware that you missed:
