Wow !!

I have so far been put off buying the old Mirage because of it's bad reputation but i would definitely chance buying a brand new model. Only thing that worries me is the price of $250 ......as it is not enough, if you know what i mean.

Is this the same as the phantom?

Hi ergundel,

That was the first "phantom". Milton Bradley released 3 of those:

1. The MB Grandmaster (USA)
2. The MB Phantom (UK)
3. The Milton (Germany)

They drove me crazy for a while until Steve Blincoe and Mike Watters confirmed what I suspected when I started checking them out: they are all the same computer. I still wonder about the different names. Would those names appeal more to the audiences in those countries?

There's an interesting post (somewhere in the back) where Mike talks about the prototype.

Some more info here:
http://www.ismenio.com/chess_mb_grandmaster.html

Fidelity (I believe they bought the rights from MB) later released the Phantom which added an LCD + better program. The models where:

1. Phantom 6100 (http://www.ismenio.com/chess_fidelity_phantom6100.html)

2. Phantom 6124 (I don't have this one - it had voice)

3. Phantom 6126 (http://www.ismenio.com/phantom_6126.html)

Interesting that Excalibur chose to name the new model "Phantom". I wonder if some of the crazy auctions we have seen on eBay and some of the talks about robotic chess in different forums have influenced Excalibur to produce this new model

Best regards,

Ismenio

Interesting news an Excalibur Phantom.

Too much to hope that it incorporates a robotic arm, I suppose. They did not persist with the Mirage. Was that due to poor design/components and failure rates?

I heard back from Marie and she did not have any more specific info to give. She said the Phantom is in "post-production" and may still change somewhat. I'm not sure what that means but hopefully it will indeed be available for sale this summer.

Yes, I was surprised too!! I also asked if it was a robotic arm or a motorized magnet design, and if it was based on the GM or a new chess program. If she responds I will post her reply here.

Wasn't that about the MSRP for the Mirage? I hope it is a strong and fast program!

Excellent!!!

Thank you so much for sharing that information!
I just really, really, really hope this is not another Talking Robotic Chess 740 ( http://www.ismenio.com/chess_collection.html <- bottom of the page ) and that they actually delivery it!

This made my day! I'm really looking forward to this release.

Now, what do you think about that price? Am I the only one thinking that it seems to be kind of low for a robotic unit?

I wonder about the features and whether it will be more than a newer version of the Mirage. It doesn't seem like that based on the messages.

Either way, I'm happy!!

All the best,

Ismenio

I thought that you folks might be interested in this correspondence I had with Marie over at Excalibur.

Dear Mr. Batts,

Thank you for your reply. The current suggested retail price is
$249.95.
That may change when it released. This game is not based on the
Fidelity
Phantom. It is a new model.

Sincerely,
Marie Silva

Thank you for the information. Do you have any idea of
an MSRP? Will it be based on the Fidelity Phantom?

Regards,
Mark
