Dick, I'll keep you posted on the Phantom pieces. Question for you: how often do you run into problems with the wooden Novag Emerald Classic Plus pieces? Are there pieces, like the knights, that cause more trouble when moving than others?

Ismenio

The knights are the only ones that regularly cause problems.  Because they often need to have other pieces move out of the way, for them to pass, and they sometimes get too close to the other piece.  This is especially a problem on the opening knight moves.

However, the real problem is that I have now put the Novag pieces with the Saitek President board, and will probably leave them mated up to it.  That leaves the 6100 with nary a single piece.

You are breaking my heart over these Phantom pieces Dick. I thought you had everything but the black crowns. Or is it a complete set plus black crowns?

Mike

What I need to complete my 6126 is a *single* black crown.  I already have all the styrofoam, boxes, etc. on that one.

However, since I am now using the Novag wooden pieces that came with my 6100 on the President, I do need a set of Phantom pieces for that one.  Preferable, with all 4 crowns, please!

When does one stop chasing one's tail on this stuff?  If you purchase one to complete one you already have, then you will still need to have stuff to complete the one you just purchased to complete the previous one.

Some of you are really mad, mad, mad.

It reminds me of Ismenio and I chasing plexiglass lids. I ended up buying an MB in Germany with two lids for way over the odds. Three Germans emailed me desperate to get their hands on the spare lid. No way! But the search for more lids continues.

I have this vision of Ismenio buying yet another  Phantom just to get the last styrofoam insert he needs. It is only too true that once you have the sought after machine it isn't long before you want one in mint condition with all the trimmings. Ebay can be a tease in that respect because you often don't know quite what you are buying.

A second Russian Mattel !!  Where is my Siberian travel brochure? On your point Ismenio I agree that you have to draw a line on different versions of the same machine. Collecting all three MBs seems a bit dubious now I have done it. The Russian Mattel is cool, but I wouldn't bother with two colour versions of a Mirage, Grandmaster etc or umpteen modules which are similar apart from the name or number on them. That is when my interest wanes.

Hopefully there is only one version of Cyber Thingy

Sorry Dick, I really want to help you with that, and I'm looking for a way to duplicate the pieces as we speak
But I think you may have a better chance by harassing Mike since he has a non-working Phantom

BTW, Mike, have you talked to this guy:
http://members.toast.net/j.guy/fidelity/FidelityProductsMain.htm
I don't know him but was just curious if you had considered him.

Best,

Ismenio

PS: To anyone reading this, I keep forgetting to mention that I have tons of Gmail invites, if anyone is interested just let me know and I'll send you one

Mike/Dick: Thanks! I guess I figure this is as close as I will ever get to an Eyeball! But it was more for the packaging since my Phantom is a "barebone" one.

Ismenio

Since all you wanted was the packaging, you really don't need the chess pieces for this latest 6100, right?  Unless, of course, they happen to be a different color than the usual ones.

I happen to have a very close friend that really does need a set of these Phantom chess pieces, if you happen to feel that these are extra.

You can keep all of that valuable styrofoam, cardboard, etc., that you bought.

Sometimes I wonder about things like this. For example, the Excalibur Grandmaster, which comes in two colors (colours for Mike would you guys buy two of them for collector's sake?

Even things like getting the same model from different vendors or countries is something that I'm not sure about. For example, the Mattel LCD one, like the one this guy has:

Ismenio,

I run into this all the time with my phonograph record collecting.  There are different symbols, colors, words, etc. on the labels for different pressings, countries, special releases, etc., and some are worth many times the others by collectors.    When I find one of the rare ones, I will always sell it for a big profit, if I already have one of the more common ones.

Yes, this is a big deal for the true collectors of records, and I suppose I am not one of them, in spite of the many thousands that I own.  What I am interested in collecting is the *music* and not the records.

So, yes, I would think if you wanted to be a real collector of these machines you need to acquire every variation that there is.

(Steve has one also) is something that I have no doubt is a highly collectible unit but personally this would not be on the top of my list as I have other models I'd like to have first, especially when I have the English Mattel one.

How can I stop?! (At least I recognize I need help

Why did you want this one, Ismenio?  Was it the green lettering?

They have a third one up on eBay now.

My own modest purchase is one of those strange chess games that can play(?) chess but isn't a chess computer, Cyber Thingy.

I will tell you about it if and when it arrives.

All the best
