Mike,

its not clear to me because its not indicated. At the end of the text there is some advertising for countrywide like "Naturally, Countrywide Computers will be delighted to take your order!".

So guess who is the author... (you might know it better than me). At that time the magazine was published by Countrywide at least.

the mystery continues regards

Stefan

There were some good games in that match too.

Chess computer fans in England were well served at that time for news and information. There were two magazines Selective Search and Chess Computer News. At about the time of the Diamond v Nigel Short match Eric Hallsworth switched sides and joined Terry Knight at Competence who produced Chess Computer News. So for a while Eric had no hand in Selective Search which was produced by Mike Healey, boss at Countrywide Computers. There was some rivalry there for a while.

Eventually Eric went back to Countrywide. But who wrote the Diamond/NS match up Eric or Mike Healey?

Keeping the mystery going regards,
Mike

Hi,

just a (side) remark. On the occasion of the Diamond release, the british Selective Search magazine (Issue 53, p 16 ff) published 10 games Diamond vs Nigel Short with 60 min each. The result was 7-3 for ...?

I posted this already once in CCC so everybody who read this already (Alain for instance) is excluded from guessing here

mystery regards

Some advertising i have from 1995 shows the Mephisto Nigel Short being retailed at UK £270 with a quoted rating of 192 bcf= 2135 elo, and on the same page you have the Novag Diamond with a lower price of £250 and a rating of 205 bcf= 2240 elo.

..............so which one would you buy ?.

You don't really want us to answer this, do you?

And not to forget: the Novag Diamond plays a much more active and (in my eyes!) interesting chess than a Milano (which has a more positional style)

Maybe the NS was so expensive, because Nigel Short (the 'real one'!  ) wanted too much money for his name!

Perhaps H&G should have called this computer 'Mephisto Leigh' (NS's birthplace) or after any other British city, e.g. 'Mephisto Birmingham' would sound good!

Ok these were the days of chess computers being  heavily over rated but the diamond is a strong machine whereas the NS  only really seems to be a Milano after all.
Seems you would have been crazy to have opted for the NS unless your British pride came first and you just had to have a computer with our heros name on it.

Along with the opinion that it was never released outside the UK could this also explain its relative rarity today.

WOW the auction ended not so long ago & it went for: £176 !! = $320 !!!!

He/she'll be grinning all the way to the bank!

One thing I have noticed though... & this is just a cheeky flippant comment -
...... doesn't it always seem that ALL the desireable comps get 'sucked' into Germany when won on Ebay etc... It appears that this is where the winner of the Nigel Short is from....
I remember bidding on a Cougar last year.. got pipped by just £1 - & off the machine went to Germany!?
Germany certainly seems to be the mecca for Chess addicts?

:-)

Hi Stefan

Quote from: Stefan Ottow on February 26, 2006, 02:35AM

did you ever try to look at the program version? You can do it by pressing "MEM" and "INFO" at the same time (this works also for the Polgar).

My Polgar has the version 1.10 and I know that at least a version 1.50 is exsisting. For the Milano there are the versions 1.01 and 1.02 that I know of. If you try this you will find out for the Nigel Short. If its simply a Milano version there should be something like 1.03 or so.

looking forward regards
Stefan

Even on the Milano, I don't succeed making this
"Memory" seems to have the priority, I always finish in "Spieler-Spieler" mode

May me I should ask my kids to do it ? They are becoming better than me with game controllers

Alain

Alain,

I guess I was wrong. You need to press 1st "MEM" and then "INFO", sorry.

Please try again.  Anyway I was biddng for the NC but finally it went to other spheres...

Can wait for the next N/S regards

Hi Jose,

Yes, i see it looks like Milano Pro, but why it is named Nigel Short? Normal all have the same name, if it build from the same factory? So it is. Thanks Alain

José

Even if the Milano Pro has almost the same look, it is a different computer. The NS is almost identical to the basic Milano.

And I think it is called Nigel Short for marketing reasons (because of Short-Kasparov match).

Best,

Hi all,

what is nigel short - never heared before?
Can you explain?

Thanks and Greetings José

its other name is the "Super Milano".
As far as I know, it was released around the Kasparov-Short match.
It looks and plays like the Milano but is supposed to be 30 pts stronger but I don't know why : improved hardware ? end game improvement ? bug corrections ?
I really don't know. I have tested both computers on a series of positions and in most cases, they played the exact same move in the exact same time, so I don't think it has a better hardware than the Milano.

And I don't really understand how Schroeder could have spent time improving the Milano's program after having released both the Risc 1MB and Gideon program for PC  I sent him a mail last week but I did not get any answer (it does not really surprise me).

I haven't found anything on the web about the NS.

Best,
Alain
