Mike/sderyke2002,

I also know nothing about that unit, but if we were to become more interested in Chinese Chess, this could be something to look at:

Robots Challenge Chinese Chess Masters

Link to the original story:

http://esperanto.china.org.cn/english/scitech/160028.htm

The short news article follows:

China will hold its first chess match between humans and robots this year according to sources within the Chinese Society of Artificial Intelligence.

Robots are the challengers and will meet five masters of Chinese Chess at the First Chinese Chess Competition in July. In August robots and humans will confront each other once again at the country's first exhibition of artificial intelligence products and achievements.

The competition, to be held from July 25-31, will be sponsored by the Society of Artificial Intelligence and three Universities.

Chinese scientists, who've developed the participating robots, have studied robots playing Chinese Chess which is different from the popular chess.

As well as the competition there will be a symposium at which scientists will share their views on the Chinese Chess-playing robots.

(Xinhua News Agency March 3, 2006)

When will we see something like this with traditional chess?

Best,

Ismenio

I play Chinese chess and Shogi (Japanese chess) as well. I don't know anything about the Novag unit - though I once owned the Fidelity pocket Chess computer that played Chinese chess - horribly.

Chinese chess has a limited area for the king and more limited powers for the rest of the pieces so pawns become more important.

Shogi is alot like tandem blitz or some people call it coffeehouse chess (two boards and the pieces can be dropped from one to another) except it is played between just two people on one board.

Both are facinating games in their own unique way and I liked playing them however my only opponent was a computer as locally there were no players to be found.

Sorry I can't say more about the computer in question.
