Tony, Endspielgott was a bit scoffing at the Atlanta, because this computer has software by Frans Morsch, a Dutch programmer, very good at tactics, but slightly weak in endings in contrast with computers which have software by Richard Lang, a British programmer, whose software is a bit worse at tactics, but better in endings ...

I have a catalogue by Novag from about 1995 or somewhat later, which contains pictures of your chess computers except the Diamond. They are very strong and look just cool. The design of the American chess computers is unmatched in my eyes.

I wonder whether your Novags can find the move, Mr. Nun found in 1965, when he defeated Mr. Estrin in a correspondence game?

https://sites.google.com/site/mephistoatlanta/middle-games/estrin-nun-1965-66

Unfortunately I can't upload pictures any more, since Yahoo! stopped their costless services ...

Tom

Hi Tom, if your thinking of the "star" don't leave out the diamond II and the Diamond. they are all good machines with each about 15 ELO lower than the next generation. I have all 3 and my favorite is the Diamond (ELO) 2091. they all have the same features except the diamond does not accept batteries if thats important to you. the first diamond is finished in nice dark charcoal color, the other 2 in silver-grey. the book is smaller in the 1st diamond 23,000 vs 123,000 but is adequate for me. occasionally a diamond or II will show up on e-bay. as to prices, I would think they would all be pretty close to each other, but that's a guess. regards, Tony

Paul,

have fun with it! Anyway you only have to reach the endgame...you'll blow him to pieces there

Christian

Christian, that may be right in some circumstances such as the human player is a chess master like you, right?

But average chess players like me don't have the slightest chance against this terrible Morsch machine neither in middle games nor in any endgame, not to mention the openings where it usually crushes its opponent within few moves.

I have seen a few of your games at schachcomputer.info against strong machines which showed that you are a rather good player. So there is a small difference ...

Thanks Christian! That's an interesting tournament there........can't believe the Risc2500 took such a hammering against the Sparc.......or that the Atlanta beat a R30 v2.2 in the semifinal either!!

If you play a hundred games between the Tasc and the Atlanta I am sure the Tasc will make 70% ... but still...an impressive result. This will rise the value of my Atlanta

I have emailed the company to see if the Atlanta is geniunely in stock or if it's an out of date page. I won't know until the UK is back from it's public holiday on Tuesday.........

Thanks again for the infomation

Paul,

the Atlanta was build in 1997 as I recall...it is not build anymore. You will be lucky to find one in a store

But you could try to post a search at the Forum at schachcomputer.at - maybe somebody over there has got one of these for sell.

Good luck,

Christian

though I think I may have found an Atlanta (brand new) which is seriously tempting me even though it's twice the price that I can get the Star Diamond for............... ...............it's a bad affliction we all carry for sure!!!

Thanks again

Paul

Hey Paul,

the Atlanta is some 100 points stronger than the Star Diamond...if you look at schachcomputer.info you will see he reached the finals in their rapid chess tournament...

Thanks for all the replies Gents, looks like the Star Diamond is the winner..................I had also heard that the Star Diamond plays the more interesting chess and is capable of punching above it's weight on the odd occasion.................though I think I may have found an Atlanta (brand new) which is seriously tempting me even though it's twice the price that I can get the Star Diamond for............... ...............it's a bad affliction we all carry for sure!!!

In the ssdf list we have:

Star Sapphire  Elo:  2027
Milano Pro (Same Mephisto master program) Elo: 1976

The Mephisto is more weak (51 points) , but play more positional than Sapphire, so i think is better against humans...

On the contrary I think like Alain that the Kittinger program plays the more interesting chess. I personally find the playing style of the Milano somewhat boring and would vote for the Star Diamond

PSH regards,

Christian

Hello,

I don't have the master but the Star Diamond is a really fine computer. It looks a bit austere but has in my opinion a huge advantage against Mephisto computers : a RS232 link which you can use for example to transfer games to a PC (or Pocket PC  ).

Usually, Novag computers' chess style is seen as more fun then others.

Best,
Alain

ooooooh! Now that smarts!!! Robbing me of my only victory!  ..........I'd like to think that the last month or so of using Personal Chess Trainer 2 has improved my game, certainly I am able to beat higher personalities in CM10 then I ever have been before

I did manage to get a few more games out of it before it went bang. It just doesn't respond to any input other then the level and normal key. Might see if Saitek can repair it too as I really like having a secondary display of the board for analysing after the game without having to move the pieces about.

Any Star Diamond or Master owners out there to comment on their machines?

Do you think maybe you beat it because it was in the process of dying?

Hi All,

My trusty Saitek Prisma has finally given up the ghost and nothing seems to want to coax it back to life..........I blame finally beating it after 14 years at 40/2hrs  went bang shortly after my one and only win against it ever!

Looking about I think a replacement is between the Star Diamond and the Master. Does anyone here own these pair or can comment on the quality of the board/pieces and playing styles of these two machines?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
