It sounds like you have the key overlay for the Morphy module. The next in the series. The overlays sometimes get lost or scrunched up when the unit is closed. Perhaps the previous owner got a new overlay.

Like you say the 9 key did not have a function in the Sargon 2.5/Boris 2.5 and was used as the sound key on the Morphy onwards.

The keys, of course, were used for other things on games other than chess.

Lots of stuff to explore.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Mike.  There is a document in the paperwork included with my Boris 2.5 that indicates it was sent in for some repair in 1982.  There is no mention of what the repair was, but I would guess in the process the overlay was replaced.

Thanks,

I tried my "new" Boris 2.5 MGS and it works great.  On my modules keypad there is an Audio key.  On the picture of the keypad in the manual, there is a 9 key, instead.  I know, from reading on web sites that this 9 key does not have any function.  However, I tried the Audio key on my keypad, and it also didn't seem to do anything.  I would have thought it would have been to turn off the beeping sound.  The manual doesn't mention the Audio key at all.

Could this simply be a key that was added to a later module for a talking Boris and isn't available on my system?

So many variations of these things.
