I'm touched by this heartwrenching post about the death of a botherhood. Though none of you know me I am a Brother. Brought up in a different game, under different leadership and yet I find myself attached to you all the same. My name is Technical Sergeant Sidley of the 5th ranger battalion in the game Day of Defeat Source. We've been a thriving community of over 150 members for nearly eight years now. I wish to exstend an invitation to everyone who is a member of this Unit to our unit. My 5th ranger battalion is a dominate force in our game as was yours. Please, take some time and look at the forums of my 5th Ranger battalion. maybe you will like what you see and deside to stay. It would be an honor to have you join us.

I knew this day would come sooner rather than later and the date, as Rebar said, seems most appropriate. I only got a small taste of playing along side you guys but it sure made my Ghost Recon and entire gaming experience much more enjoyable. Thank you all very much and I hope we can meet again sometime! *salutes*

Today, June 6, is the 64 anniversary of the 5th Ranger Battalion hitting the beaches of Normandy, and I thought an appropriate time to disband the unit.
Truth be told, the unit died a long time ago, with the collapse of the Ghost Recon gaming scene, and the failure of any game, even after 7 years or so, to take it's place. Hope and inertia delayed what was, in hindsight, inevitable.
I think back to when I first bought Ghost Recon, learning the SP campaigns, looking through all the different mods, and discovering War of Infamy. We know where that lead, to modding, the creation of the 5th Rangers, that glorious time of multiple matches every week, the bonding of the members into an almost unbeatable unit. Good times.
Even more, I had thought I was pretty knowledgeable about WWII history, but modding for War of Infamy taught me I knew very little indeed, and even though I learned a lot, there is so much more to learn that no one person could ever know it all. I hope everyone learned at least a bit about the history, to appreciate the sacrifices of the American GI who fight and died to stop fascism.
The internet is an anonymous medium, and I never met any of the members face to face, but I feel genuine friendship and camaraderie with you all. Even years after we became inactive, some would stop by this site to check up to see if something was going on. I doubt anyone still does, but I owe it to anyone who might, to at least make this small announcement, rather then see it just up and vanish.
Someday a game might come along that might bring some of us together again, or maybe not. I'm reminded of the words in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar:
Quote:And whether we shall meet again I know not.
Therefore our everlasting farewell take.
Forever and forever farewell, Cassius.
If we do meet again, why, we shall smile.
If not, why then this parting was well made.

Ghost Recon/War of Infamy is still on my harddrive, and once a month or so I'll run through a scenario, or just a firefight. I always think of you guys and the fun we had. I like to think we did some honor to the real soldiers of the 5th Ranger battalion, however small.
