Hi,

I go back to the first part of your line, 2) John James Gilliland (1689-1728)  is my GGGGGGF along with his wife.Margaret (1690-1730).  I come forward through 3) James Adam (1715- 1795); 4) Alexander James (1737-1795); 5) Robert (1778-1820);6) Stephen Willis (1809-1882) [died Iowa].  I have traced the line of Robert (1748) and his move to the midwest.  (the 1850 Census shows Samuel and Catherine GILLAND (Both born 1792) in Wapello Co. IA and not far away is Robert J GILLILAND (1819) and his wife Mary (1826)along with three children John 4 (1846); Charles 3 (1847); and Louiza 1 (1849).  Your flow of 4-5-6-7 from US Census reports  appears to be correct.  I could check the 1900 Census for you to see about 7-8 being linked.  Their are  lot of bits and fragments from before 1750's, so it is possible to go wrong. ;D ;D

Hi, Paul!  Thanks so much for responding!

I am glad to know that some of my info is correct.  I have a hand-written note from 1964 from my gr grandmother, Jessie Maude Gilliland Brown. She was 79 at the time.  She listed her father, Perry Laffeatt (her spelling), his parents, Jackson Gilliland & Mary Jane Chapman, siblings Charly, Frank, Tom, Louisie, Laura, Rozellie & Menerva ? (which had been crossed out).  I really didn't know anything about her family so I'm just going by her note & census reports, hoping the info is correct.  Thanks for including the yrs for births & deaths.  I noticed a few discrepancies so I will go back & change my info. I've really enjoyed reading what you have posted.  So much info!

Thanks again!  Truly appreciated   Would love to hear from you again if you find any more info!

I'm curious about that record for William Gilliland and Elizabeth Manard. What kind of supporting documentation is there for that record? One of the reasons I ask, being a Maynard myself, is that it is not a surname normally associated with Scotland.
Like Paul said, those pre-1750 records can be a bit cloudy and hard to prove and I would be a bit suspicious of that one -- unless there's a record out there I haven't seen. I'm very curious.

Kate, I believe I got that info from Ancestry.com from someone's family tree.  I don't think I ever found solid proof, just going by what others had.  I will check on it again & see if I can find anything else.

I don't believe the Dr. Robert gilliland mentioned here is buried in Decatur County Indiana.  I think he is in Union or Fayette County. There is a John Gilleland 5th PA, Rev War in Decatur County buried in a small cemetery adjacent to John Gilliland Rockingham County N.C. War of 1812.  I have never been able to document the fathers of either, but i have seen documents that show Robert marrying a Helmick in Union County.  Also the 1830 census shows a John Gilliland in Decatur County with a male 80-90 years old.  I believe the old John died shortly after coming to Decatur County but i don't know their relationship.
