Cadoxton Barry F.C. 2 - 0 Ynsyhir Albion
With two regulars suspended, two unwell and one walking wounded, the quality of the Linnets' fringe players was always going to be tested from the outset against a fellow title-chasing side. The first half could be likend to a piece of cake with Cadoxton Barry taking two thin slices at its start and finish while Ynyshir gobbled up a huge chunk from the middle.
The first five minutes seemed to see the Linnets building up a head of steam before Ynys stepped in to put them on the defensive. And this was where the promoted players came into their own. Though it was difficult viewing to see CB playing from so deep, it was clear that the ploy was gradually taking the sting out of, what had the potential to be, a lethal Ynys strike force.
Then, only minutes before half time, a high ball out of the Linnets' defence found Ashley Govier. His determined run down the right saw him forced wide before he managed to elude his challanger. With the Ynys 'keeper coming forward to reduce his view of goal even more, he dummied to send him the wrong way before rounding off an excellent strike.
The early stages of the second half saw Ynyshir continue to press - though creating very little by way of opportunity - against a defence in which Pat Curran was outstanding - he had replaced Mathew Blackie who, for the third game running, was forced to retire with a bruised foot.
The Linnets' first real threat of the second half came ten minutes in when Darren Baker blasted one against the Ynys cross bar from distance. Meanwhile, the back four continued to graft away in keeping the eager Albion front runners at bay.
Then Karl Steel grappled for a 50/50 ball with the Ynys 'keeper and managed to get it across to Govier who put it into the net to no avail - the referee judging that Steel had fouled the 'keeper. With the clouds low in the sky it was now getting rather gloomy, making it difficult for both sets of players to pick out the ball when coming in from height.
The Albion number six, arguably their man-of-the-match, got himself booked for dissent and then, having clattered a linesman to the ground, lunged in with a reckless tackle on Rhys Newland. This second yellow in as many minutes earned him his marching orders and CB a bit of breathing space.
With fifteen minutes left on the clock Govier took a well earned rest to give Gareth Fiddler his first outing of the season in first team colours. And it was some excellent interplay between him and James Dawson that set up the goal that sealed the game for the Linnets - Darren Baker gratefully coverting the resulting cross. Cadoxton Barry were now well in control and it was probably only a little bit of over confidence in going for the clever stuff rather than the obvious that prevented them from widening the margin of victory before the final whistle.
With this being the only game played in Division Two of the South Wales Senior League, the unbeaten Linnets return to the top of the table on 24 points, but still with a game in hand on most of the chasing pack.

Ely Rangers 0 - 1 Barry Town Cosslett
A game which was a little ragged in parts and entertaining at other times. Town had a good number of fluent moments although they also survived a few panic sessions at the back. Overall, not a bad game in which the spoils could have gone either way. If Ely had got something, Town couldn't have complained. As it was, with Town winning, Rangers can't grumble either. |

All games scheduled for Bryn-y-Don on Saturday 21st, November have been called off. As both the 2nds and the 3rds were sheduled to play on adjacent pitches at Bryn-y-Don, it means that neither side will play. K.O. 2pm.

South Wales Youth League 8/11/09
Barry A.F.C. 4 - 0 Llantrisant McKinnery 2 Corlette, Lawler
This game was certainly not a walk in the Maslin Park for Barry. Indeed, for the first twenty minutes, the Llantrisant lads mounted a goodly number of dangerous raids on Ethan Dicks' goal.
Then Barry earned a corner which was whipped in by Luke Walsh - Josh Corlette getting in first to score with a great header.
Gradually the balance of play was changing and by half time Barry were looking quite comfortable.
The lead was extended early in the second half when Connor McKinnery, on the right edge of the penaly box, scored with a cracking hooked shot which started with his back to goal.
The otherwise excellent Llantrisant 'keeper failed to hold on to a flerce drive from the right and McKinnery was on hand to put the ball away.
And the final goal was a well taken angled effort, again from out on the right, driven home by Dan Lawler.
Eventually, a comfortable win for the former Linnets, high in entertainment value and contributed to in no small way by the valient Llantrisant lads.

South Wales Senior Cup
Full Time: Cadoxton Barry F.C. 3 - 3 Penrhiwceiber A.E.T.: Cadoxton Barry F.C. 4 - 4 Penrhiwceiber Baker 2, o.g., Dawson
Penrhiwceiber go through to next round 5 - 4 on penalties
Imagine yourself playing in a prestigious cup competition. It has gone to a penalty shoot out and it is all square after the mandatory five penalties to each side have been taken. You're brave enough to take the first of the sudden death penalties for your side. You strike it crisply, according to the text book, rising to the right and beyond the 'keeper and then... 'thud', it finds the cross bar instead of the net. Imagine that knotted feeling in the stomache as you hear it. Well Rhys Newland doesn't have to imagine any of it because that is what actually happened. So please spare a sympathetic thought for the agony he must have felt. Having said that, Cadoxton Barry players will be the first to admit that they were the architects of their own downfall.
Everything started so well. Ten minutes in a Lewis Stait corner found the head of Darren Baker whose nod was palmed away by a defender, but not before it had crossed the line. Then, just two minutes later, a very clever scooped cross from Martyn found Baker to drill home for his second in as many minutes. The Linnets were now cruising and totally dictating the play.
Penrhiwcieber's first chance came just on the quarter hour mark when Norris fumbled a the ball. It fell loose to a Pen forward who shot wide of a gaping net.
Then, with the game still young, a neat passing movement ended when a Pen defender sent the ball wide of his 'keeper to enter off the right post when trying to intercept a pass aimed at Lewis Stait. Cadoxton Barry's flowing play left Pen simply chasing shadows - Ross Matthews going close when put through by Martyn.
Five minutes into the second half Pen created only their second chance of the game, Matthews coming to the rescue with a goal line clearance. This spured Pen into upping their standards, though the Linnets remained in overall control - Martyn bringing a good save from the Pen 'keeper with a low and fierce free kick.
Pen went up the other end to put one wide when it would have been easier to score before the Linnets asserted themselves once more. Martyn's excellent running off the ball saw him get into three or four goal scoring positions and as many goal creating positions, but he fired when he should have passed and passed when he should have fired.
So by the time that Blackie, who had marshalled the Linnets' rearguard to perfection, had to come off with a re-occurance of a foot injury, Cadoxton Barry could have been a good eight goals to the good - it was that one sided. But suddenly, unbalanced by the departure of Blackie, the Linnets defence found themselves all at sea with no plan. Lewis Stait then earned himself a booking for what the referee deemed to be a clumsey foul. And now the Linnets' back division was beginning to look really fragile - though Dawson broke away to send in a cracking dipper from 30 yards that went just over the Pen bar.
Just after, a high ball out of the Pen half saw the nervy CB defenders static as they appealed for off side whilst a Pen forward took full advantage to pull one back. With the back four still unable to re-group, the pressure was on the Linnets to hold on to what they had as the two goal lead began to look rather flimsey.
A penalty was conceeded and up stepped the Penrhiwcieber Number 10 to hit a well struck ball. However, Norris, in the Linnets' goal was well up to it, diving to his left to make a tremendous save.
There was a momentary steadying of the ship as Baker and Martyn saw chances go begging before Baker, having done a really good day's work, was replaced up front by Ashley Govier. Strangely, substitutions, wherever they are on the field, often seem to phase the CB defence and, once again, they started to look wobbly. And this came to a head with ten minutes left as Bickley was pressurised into a hand ball in the box - though the straight red that accompanied the penalty award seemed a little harsh. This time, however, Norris was unable to get a hand to the ball. And with just two minutes remaining Pen made the man advantage tell when a long ball found a Pen forward to nod in an equaliser. So it was that the Linnets had to face extra time with just ten men.
Suddenly it appered that the clock had been turned back. The free flowing passing game returned and fortunes were turned on their head as, once again, the Linnets realised that the game was still there to be won. A neat build up saw substitute Chick cross from the right towards Govier, but his excellent dummy allowed the ball to run on to James Dawson to strike an excellent finish. With the ten men once again in control, three glorious chances for Cadoxton Barry to close things out were wasted in the space of thirty seconds - something that they would live to regret.
Seven minutes from time, with the ten men still seeming to be in control of proceedings, a Penrhiwceiber counter attack ended with an excellent dipping shot from distance getting the better of Norris. However, for a few minutes more, the Linnets still looked capable of getting a winner.
But then, in the dying minutes, a break upfield earned Pen a free kick near the right side of the half way line. Whilst Stait was walking away with his back to the ball, Pen took a quick free kick. Stait clearly had no malicious intent and was hardly aware that the kick had been taken when the referee waved a second yellow card at him for 'not getting away from the ball.' With the amazed Stait gone, the Linnets were left with just nine men. Hanging on for another minute or so for penalties was now all that could be achieved - and the events of the shoot out will now be consigned to the history books.
If a lesson is to be learned from this set back it is that players will have to learn to keep their focus when substitutions, whether forced or tactical, are made.
Best wishes for a long run in this cup go to Penrhiwcieiber.
Due to the Wales/Scotland international, there are no games this coming Saturday, so the Linnets' next game will be on 21st November when they entertain Ynyshir Albion at Jenner Park in a 2pm kick off..

The Linnets moved to second spot in SWSL2, with two games in hand on leaders Lisvane/Llanishen after scoring three second half goals against a Whitchurch team with the league's meanest defence.
It was a reputation well-deserved as both sides struggled to create chances in the game's first hour.
The game came to life with 2 goals in a minute - one at both ends and both from corners. We scored first but the self-congratulation had barely ended before Whitchurch levelled.
It was going to take something special to separate the teams, and that duly arrived when Dawson let fly from well outside the box with a stonking effort.
Now chasing the game, Whitchurch started to push players up the park and were cruelly exposed by the Linnets' pace and fitness - Dawson scoring the third at the end of normal time.
Nice one, lads |
