Step 1 loosen track

Step 2 remove front bogies

Step 3 drill a hole about 1 to 1 1/2" higher than where the bogie mounting tab is, your bolt will not be above the running boards.

Step 4 reinstall bogies and re adjust track. Enjoy actually turning when you move the bars

I didn't take pics but I did this to my 71 and it's great. I can actually turn the thing on GRASS now. Why didn't I do it years back? I did this to my 69 Oly and it turns too.

Ditch the widers! They will will bend the spindles.

Best way for ski pressure is wood blocks like so

Looks like a typo here....your bolt will "now" be above the running boards.

This is a good technique, I've used it and I like it.

Thanks all, will try the wood blocks first I think.  If I don't like them will  do the raising of track in front this spring.  Hoot

Something else to consider is 71 didnt have much in the way of leaf springs on the skis.  I am planning on putting 74 elan leaf's (3 per side instead of 2) into my 71...  hopefully that adds some pressure.  The originals were pretty weak, on mine at least.

My 71' handles better than my 72'.  It has spreaders on the skis but they are swept back instead of forward that gives the sled a shorter ski base.  I tried the spreaders on the other way but the skis kept flipping because the 71' Elan doesn't have a travel stop on the spindle.

Eric, rock core logging is measuring diamond drill samples for rock quality design.  It is essentially what engineers use for determining foundation design for bridge abutments.  It's part of what I do for "work"

Finally put the wood blocks on skis, I haven't run it for a few years. I'm getting a little old so will have it for next deer season. New battery the coming week. Will try to get electric start to work. 4 wheeler let me down deer season snapped an axle at end of season. The long walk to blind..no good
Will try to stay at it!Can't keep putting things off-I'm 74 .

I did this and it worked great. I took front set of bogies and cut the whole thing down in length by 3/4",retapped the holes, took a plate-1/2 by 3 drilled one pass though hole and another with a taper on outside. Now you can drill the pass though hole  1" from end on 3" plate ,then drill the tapered hole 1" from the other end. Put a bolt with tapered head into the end of aluminum rod on both ends, now rotate the whole bogie gang higher into tunnel and bolt pass though hole on plate into existing tab. Now your gang is higher in tunnel so you have less track weight and more down pressure on skis.

I had the same problem with my 1991 elan, no ski pressure. I added carbides, 4" to the skis and now it turns.  I could see possibly moving the front bogies up a little though if needed.
