66 in the works

This project got started a couple of years ago but then set aside for a while. I'm trying to push it to the finish line by Labor Day.
Here's what I started with, $150 about 40 miles from home, didn't even bother to try and start it

came with a "newer" 299 which is being replaced with a '67 299 14.5hp. It's on the bench and nearly done, photos to come.

pretty typical topside, no rot

It took some hard hits. Tank was cut open by a previous owner, clean welds, was holding fuel when I bought it

spider cracking was extensive all the way around, disc sanded off the large areas

dremel for the detail work

The headlight opening was broken up around the edges, was repaired with marine epoxy from West Marine

Just a little fine shaping to go

Chassis is currently in primer, axles, bogies, steering parts, clutches, chain case, and recoil are finished. This sled is going to get cab and steering upgrades... 1970 style cabin latches and steering support loop

Nice progress. I know you like to build your own seats so are you going to tackle this one too?

I bought a seat from Mark St. Cyr at the NH swap last year. It's close but not exactly correct but the price was too good to pass up. Of course I'm having second thoughts about it now.

It's now mid October, where does the time go ?
cab with final repairs

cab in primer. I used white epoxy aresole from ddub. Really nice product...good coverage, good fill, sands smooth without coming off.

chassis was originally primed in red, it was reprimed in the white epoxy. We added the filler neck supports and repaired the broken weld at the bottom of the neck.

The two deep creases in the ski lobe are from the leaf springs. The same type of damage is present on the opposite side. I've seen this on other mid '60's heaps.

creases filled, welds faired. I used West Marine 2-stage epoxy and hardner for these areas

I've made quite a bit of progress on it the last couple of weeks, the photos haven't caught up with it all yet.

Rats, I goofed, didn't take a closeup of the club sticker on the cab before I removed it. I cleaned the chassis by hand...5F5 stripper, whizzy wheel, and wire brush (I believe in dooing things the easy way)
Yeti...Yes, I am going to ride this one.

The First Annual Joe Lonely Invitational (FAJLI)...sign me up. Parry on my wayward son.
Now back to show and tell.
The engine is a 299 from a '67 Oly. The head sprung to life with shine when I put it to the wire wheel, after which I had no choice but to make the rest of the it look as good. Clutch is all cleaned and painted, fan housing still needs to be buffed out, recoil color needs to be changed from black to silver. I will note here that I have been a reluctant participant in this restoration. I just wanted to fix and run. But no, it wouldn't let me.

Skis were chem stipped on the bench with 5F5, pits were skim coated with bondo, primed with ddub white epoxy primer, finished with JD Old Contruction Yellow aresole.

A whole lot of yellow goin' on 'round here lately.

I'm really pleased at how the surface of the cab has turned out. The spider cracking was so extensive, with time and patience all evidence of it has been removed. The photos don't really reveal that, of course, but I've been inspecting this heap for three days now and can not find a scratch or pin hole. So Yeti, I may not be riding it after all The raised edge of the stripe had been obliterated in large part during initial sanding and grinding, reshaping it was a task. There are still a few final coats of yellow to go after cabin latches are installed, after extruded aluminum bumper from Spaulding is attached to the chassis, after wind shield holes are drilled, and after steering support column is fitted.

Nice work, Larry! Are ya going to paint the inside black?
On my 69 cab I used a product called TEC FLOW for the filler, and over the 10 months since it was done, well, there has been some shrinking of the filler so you can look close and see the old cracks.
A friend who paints yachts and does a lot of fiberglas and gel coat work suggested what I will do next time, paint the outside of the hood with fiberglass resin to fill the deep cracks, then skim with the filler.

Yes, inside of the cab is already in flat black, hence the newspaper and blue tape in headlight and filler openings.
There are so many professional products and techniques that can be brought to bear on jobs like this, I really ought to be more familiar with them. I keep telling myself to check in with the local voc school for an evening course on paint and body work and find out how you really doo this. My approach so far has been stirictly amature....that is to say off-the-shelf consumer products and a lot work by hand for want of the proper tools. Still, good results can be had, especially if you're willing to re-doo your mistakes as many times at it takes to get it right. Story of my life

Yes, I doo like that look. All the projects for me so far have been early '70's, so this one is different. I wasn't sure if that black jug was factory at first, most of the paint was gone with surface rust in its place. But I remember seeing other sleds here on the board with that look so I researched old photos. The fan housing will be buffed up shinny shine ala longnecker and EricR so it will have that pimped out Rotax look to it
